As Central and Northern Alabama copes with the cold temperatures we want to ensure that all Veterans are aware of safe and warm environments. For those without adequate heat or shelter, the following Warming Stations are available.

Please take care, dress in layers, and avoid unnecessary travel during extreme weather. Please be safe.

Currently operating warming shelter with tentative plans to continue until February 4, 2026. Must be ambulatory/able to get around. Behavior problems will be discharged, no access if “drunk or high.” No pets allow, no emotional support animals, will only accept Service Animals.

Municipal Building: 23415 Highway 195. Open to warm up if anyone needs to get out of the cold.

Huntsville Warming Stations:

The Livin’ Room (2820 Governors Drive SW, Huntsville. Opens Saturday 4 p.m.–Tuesday 9 a.m. Meals, temporary beds, warm showers, hygiene supplies, and transportation provided. Can accommodate up to 60 adults; families with children directed to appropriate services. Pets welcome if leashed or crated. Donations accepted Saturday 2–4 p.m. Free rides available via Huntsville Police and City Transit.)

First Stop (206 Stokes Street NW): Open Friday-Jan. 23 @ 5 p.m. Remaining open until Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. Transportation provided by the Huntsville Police Department. Meals and a warm place to stay available. Donations of blankets, food, and essential supplies accepted.

Southern Legacy Assembly (116 S. Royal Ave., Florence) Daytime warming center. Open Jan. 24–25.

Cherokee Community Storm Shelter (1211 2nd Street, Cherokee) Day and night warming center. Cots, blankets, and shelter provided. Open Jan. 20 until temperatures reach above 40 degrees.

Hands Across Decatur (1027 5th Ave. SE, Decatur). Breakfast 8:30 a.m.–noon, lunch during regular hours, dinner 6–8 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. Open Friday 8:30 a.m.–noon through Monday. Warm space, meals, and safety provided to anyone in need. Volunteers can text +1 (256) 654-6371 or 256-616-8210.

Salvation Army of the Shoals (1601 Huntsville Road, Florence): Check in at 5 p.m. Meals and overnight shelter provided every night. Call 256-764-4432.

Shoals Shelter (Pickup at the Help Center, 621 S. Court St., Florence, from 4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m.) The bus departs for overnight shelter by 5:45 p.m. Meals and overnight shelter provided. Open Jan. 20–26, with additional nights possible.

Town of Leighton (8856 Main Street, Leighton) Day and night warming center. Shelter provided; food and supplies not included. Open Jan. 20 until temperatures rise above freezing.

Huntsville Transit will also provide free rides to and from the warming centers. Transit operates Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

If Huntsville Transit is unavailable, Huntsville Police can transport individuals to the warming centers. To request a ride, call HPD’s non-emergency phone number, 256-722-7100.
