โข Plant โballed and burlappedโ, bare root and container-grown trees when the ground is not frozen. Container plants require less frequent watering if planted in late fall or early spring.
โข Prune apple, pear, plum, cherry, peach and nectarine trees annually before budbreak while the trees are still dormant.
โข Spruce spider mites and southern red mites may be present from March through June. Wash mites and eggs with a strong steam of water. Use caution with insecticidal soaps and horticultural oils as they may also kill natural predators.

โข Rejuvenate soil beds with compost but do not work the soil when it is wet to avoid compaction. Replenish mulch to control weeds, and conserve moisture.
โข Remove last yearโs growth from herbaceous perennials if not removed in the fall.
โข Start annuals from seed indoors to expand selection. For summer-blooming annuals, direct seed in well drained soil, mulch and keep evenly moist. Study seed packets for specific instructions.

โข For warm-season lawns: Apply pre-emergent herbicides from late February to mid-March. Centipede grass is sensitive to certain herbicides - follow label instructions.
โข For cool-season lawns: Apply pre-emergent herbicides to control crabgrass, goosegrass and foxtail. Fertilize before March 15 with 16-4-8 or 12-4-8 at ยฝ lb nitrogen per 1000 sq feet as needed to promote color and recovery from damage. Do not fertilize after March 15. Watch for brown patch, rust, yellow patch and white grubs.
