🎉Today is Friend Friday, and we're excited to introduce and thank our newest friends at Southern Wake Academy!

Hi! I'm Heather Seemuth, Events & Marketing Coordinator at Southern Wake Academy, a tuition-free North Carolina public charter school serving students in grades 6-12.

Established in 1999, Southern Wake Academy is a small school with a big community. Our size allows our staff to know students by name and understand their interests, learning styles, and goals. We emphasize a customized approach through Advisory, individual portfolio reviews, community service, job shadowing, senior internships, and honors classes.

Our school relocated to 5108 Old Powell Road in the summer of 2010. Nestled along the Fuquay-Varina and Holly Springs line, our campus draws students from Wake, Harnett, and Chatham counties. The campus offers unique learning opportunities, from water-sampling lessons at our pond to nature journaling along our wooded trail. We're continuing to expand by adding new cross-country trails and athletic fields!

An ideal day downtown includes strolling through Fuquay-Varina and seeing our students working and volunteering throughout the community. Community service is a cornerstone of our Advisory program, helping students build practical life skills and prepare for the future. It's exciting to watch them invest their time and talents in downtown businesses and events.

This year, we're especially excited about BBQ, Blues & Brews! Our students have volunteered at past events, but this will be our first year participating as an FVDA Friend.

We joined the FVDA because we're eager to build mutually beneficial relationships with community partners while supporting our local business community. We're proud to be part of the place where our students learn, serve, and grow.

It’s Friend Friday, and we’re excited to introduce and thank our newest friends, Shelley & Brian Murawsky! 👋💙

Hi everyone! We moved to Fuquay-Varina in the summer of 2024 after Brian was reassigned to Ft. Bragg. After a lot of consideration, we decided to make Fuquay-Varina our home and bought a house downtown in December 2025. Brian will officially retire from the U.S. Army in September 2027 after 30 years of service. 🇺🇸

Our family includes our 14-year-old son, Sawyer, our 4-year-old daughter, Millie, and our newest (and very spoiled!) family member, Briggs the doodle. 🐶

We chose downtown Fuquay-Varina because it’s walkable, up-and-coming, and packed with local events. It’s the perfect fit for our active little one, independent teenager, and energetic dog! We love spending time at the parks, checking out local restaurants and bars, and enjoying live music and festivals.

Our perfect Saturday downtown starts with a morning walk in Fuquay to Track Record Vinyl Shop for iced coffee, a stroll through the Growers Market, and stops at Adorn to see what's new and Southern Dash for local gifts and kids apparel. Then it’s over to Varina for lunch and cocktails at Lucci Blues, followed by ice cream at Pints—because no downtown visit is complete without it! 🍦 We’d finish the day with pizza, beers, and live music.

We’re excited to become Friends of the FVDA, stay connected, and support the amazing small businesses that make Fuquay-Varina feel like home! ❤️

🎉 It’s Friend Friday! This week we’re excited to introduce and thank our Friend and Board Member, Laura Fahnestock

I’ve lived in Fuquay-Varina for over 11 years, but I originally grew up in Raleigh before spending many years in Rocky Mount where I served as a law enforcement officer for over 24 years.

When the opportunity came up to apply for the Police Chief position in Fuquay-Varina, my husband Van and I came to town for a visit to see if this town would be the right fit. Our first stop was the FVDA office where we picked up an event schedule before exploring downtown, talking with residents and business owners, and grabbing a snack at Stick Boy Bakery. As soon as we returned home, I started working on my application!

Five months later, on June 1, 2015, I took my Oath of Office as Fuquay-Varina Police Chief and proudly served until my retirement in 2022 after more than 31 years in law enforcement. I was then recruited to become an FVDA Board Member, and I’ve continued volunteering ever since.

What I love most about Fuquay-Varina is the hometown southern charm and the way this community brings people together. Whether you’ve lived here your whole life or just arrived, people genuinely welcome you. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t run into someone new downtown and engage in a great conversation about Fuquay-Varina.

One of my favorite ways to spend a day downtown starts with an early morning walk through both downtowns with a smoothie from Stick Boy Bakery. I love seeing businesses open for the day, admiring the beauty of our older buildings and parks, and stopping by KnB’s Marketplace to check on my antique and vintage booth, Thistleclaw Vintage. Later I may grab lunch at Duke’s or Mason Jar, browse downtown shops for gifts. If we're out for dinner, then The Library is an excellent choice, and dessert usually involves a visit to Pints for Ice Cream! Saturdays at the Fuquay-Varina Growers Market are another favorite of mine.

It’s impossible to pick just one favorite downtown event, but the FVDA Trick-or-Treat event and the Town Tree Lighting with FVDA’s Sleigh Rides are at the top of my list. I volunteer every year at Halloween and love seeing children and families filling downtown in costume. The Tree Lighting event feels like a Hallmark Christmas movie come to life — joyful, festive, and full of community spirit.

Being a Friend of FVDA allows me to continue giving back to the community I love. Retirement may have ended my law enforcement career, but it didn’t end my passion for serving Fuquay-Varina. I believe deeply in community engagement, preserving our downtown history and culture, and helping make this town even better for everyone who calls it home. ❤️

Live music. Good food + drinks. Ice cream. Puppies. Wildlife encounters. Museum tours. Shopping. Free trolley rides. Prowler rides. And a beautiful night spent exploring Downtown. ❤️
