A message from our Post 116 Commander
Dear Legionnaires and Post 116 Family,
It is with a heavy heart that I share the painful news of the passing of our brother in arms and dear friend, Eugene "Gene" Johnson.
Gene served our nation with honor as a United States Air Force veteran in Vietnam, where he worked as a B-52 mechanic keeping our aircrews safe and our mission moving forward. Here at Post 116, he brought that same steady dedication, warm spirit, and unmatched sense of humor to everything he did.
Gene was a constant presence at the Post, always ready to lend a hand. To many of us, he was affectionately known as our "potato guy" at our monthly fish fry events, a simple title that represented his giant heart and willingness to jump in wherever needed. He had a natural gift for making people laugh, and his humor and warmth lifted the spirits of everyone in the room. He will be deeply, profoundly missed. I am sure he is in heaven sipping on a diet Dr Pepper.
Gene passed away following a motorcycle accident. His girlfriend of 11 years, Claudia Mundt, was also involved in the crash. Claudia was injured, but thankfully, she is recovering and doing well.
Our deepest thoughts, love, and prayers go out to Claudia, Gene’s family, and all who loved him.
I am currently coordinating with American Legion Riders Director Chris Stocker and leadership to determine how Post 116 can best support Gene’s family and Claudia during this immensely difficult time. We will share further details regarding service arrangements and support efforts as soon as they are finalized.
Please keep Gene’s family and Claudia in your thoughts and prayers. Rest in peace, Comrade. We will take the watch from here.
