Thank you.
On Sunday the gate at 829 N. Mount Vernon opened before seven, and the first car in had driven through the night from Arizona.
That is the picture we keep coming back to. Not the stage. Not the programme. Sisters who had never seen this compound, standing at the gate before the people who built it.
By the time the sun was fully up the kitchen was already working. Men were carrying chairs without being asked twice. Children in their best clothes were running between the chapel and the classrooms. And the church that formed so many of us in Kenya had sent her Moderator to walk through rooms built with your Saturdays and your tired hands, and to pray over them. The Government of Kenya sat in the pews beside you.
Harvest is an old word. You bring what the year gave you and you say thank you. This year the harvest was not only what came in the baskets. It was you. Nurses off night shift. Drivers who took a day. Students. Guards. Grandmothers. People who gave until it hurt and people who gave what they could and wished it were more. It was enough.
To everyone who came, who cooked, who sang, who gave, who drove far, who prayed through the week before, and to everyone who could not come and sent their tumaini (too-mah-ee-nee) with the rest of us: asante. We saw you.
The ruins are being rebuilt. Not finished. Being rebuilt. Come and see.
