This Sunday’s discussion leaders are Juana Ventura and Shelby Harras. Come learn about the traditions of Dia de los Mu***os (Latin America) and Samhain (Celtic). These ancient traditions, associated with harvest time, mark the end of summer where the boundary between the living and the spirit world grow thin. This allows for the deceased in one tradition, and ghosts, and supernatural beings in the other, to crossover. Where and how did these practices began and how they are being celebrated today will be reviewed. Attendees will be invited to share, if so moved, their traditions honoring the dead.

We meet in Room 121, behind the Fellowship Hall, at 10:15 AM sharp.

Nuestras presentantes de hoy serán Juana Ventura y Shelby Harras.
Vengan a conocer las tradiciones del Día de los Mu***os (Latinoamérica) y Samhain (Celta). Estas antiguas tradiciones, asociado con la época de la cosecha, marcan el final del verano, momento en el que la frontera entre el mundo de los vivos y el mundo de los espíritus se vuelve más abierto. Esto permite que los difuntos —en una de las tradiciones—, así como los fantasmas y otros seres sobrenaturales —en la otra—, puedan cruzar al otro lado. Exploraremos el origen de estas prácticas y cómo se celebran en la actualidad.
Invitaremos a los participantes a compartir, si así lo desean, sus propias tradiciones para honrar a los difuntos.

There is much to gain as Unitarian Universalists when we remain open to the experiences and perspectives of Indigenous leaders and communities, especially in the work of climate justice. We must not forget that climate justice is inherently intersectional: the work of climate justice is the work of disability rights and the work of racial justice; it is gender justice and migrant rights. When we center those most impacted, we center love and community care.

As Nazune Menka, M.S., J.D. (Denaakk’e and Lumbee) shared with UU World in 2022:

“For Indigenous Peoples around the world, climate change has long been more than an abstract, futuristic possibility. It has been a reality affecting the harvesting of our traditional foods and our ability to hunt and fish, affecting our ability to live on our ancestral homelands, and changing a way of life that we have been living since time immemorial.

The importance of an Indigenous worldview is illuminated by the impacts of climate change, and climate change is exacerbated by the western world’s historic and contemporary reliance on imperialistic endeavors to extract resources in the name of capitalism. But we cannot drink oil nor can we eat money… At the center of this worldview, all things are connected and interconnected, dependent and interdependent… All power, whether within the People or the natural world, is sourced from the earth itself.”

On this Indigenous Peoples Day and in all the days to come, let us center and seek the wisdom of those directly impacted as we work for justice. Together, we can become so much more than we could ever be alone; together, we become free.

What principles should guide a socialist society as it works toward a world without exploitation? In Sunday's Religious Exploration class, UUCF's Connor Atwood will guide us in an exploration of how the new communism developed by Bob Avakian approaches that question. We will also discuss how and why changing economic relations also means how people think and treat one another; why truth, criticism and dissent matter; why the methods used to make a political revolution must serve its liberating goals; and, of course, how all this relates to UU values. For those who celebrate Mabon, this season can be a time of harvest, gratitude, and reflection—a chance to honor what has grown, what has sustained us, and what we are ready to release as the year turns toward darkness.

However you mark this changing season, may it invite you to notice the gifts around you, give thanks for what has carried you this far, and make space for whatever is waiting to emerge next.
