Every year, around 300,000 mothers and 2.3 million newborns die worldwide, with most of these deaths occurring in low-resource settings. Behind every number is a family, and many lives can be protected when skilled, compassionate care is available during pregnancy and birth. Christian Health Service Corps is seeking OB/GYN physicians to serve long-term, two years or more, at partner hospitals where the need is greatest. From Burundi to Kenya, Dr. Elvis Bugusu and Dr. Marlene Ishimwe are using their God-given gifts to bring healing to mothers, newborns, and children. Their journey is one of perseverance and purpose: Elvis, raised by his mother and sisters after losing his father during Burundi’s civil war, and Marlene, the eldest of six children, both pursued medical training in Africa so they could serve the people of their own region. Today, this remarkable married couple serves side by side with Christian Health Service Corps at AIC Kijabe Mission Hospital. Dr. Elvis provides compassionate obstetric and gynecologic care, helping women and newborns receive the quality care they deserve. Dr. Marlene is pursuing a pediatric surgery fellowship through Bethany Kids, caring for children with complex surgical needs. Together, they demonstrate the sustainable impact of local physicians investing their skills back into African communities. In rural Lebamba, Gabon, Bongolo Hospital is a place of hope for families seeking care. This 158-bed partner mission hospital welcomes approximately 40,000 patients each year, providing emergency services, maternity and neonatal care, pediatric and adult treatment, surgery, ophthalmology, dental care, and HIV and TB programs. Christian Health Service Corps physicians serve as faculty alongside local leaders, training the next generation of surgeons, nurses, and midwives while providing compassionate care to mothers, children, and families.
