Happy Birthday to my beautiful and amazing sister, Ally!

Life is in a constant state of change. And while we have some influence over our environment, we often overestimate how much we can control. Life doesn't always happen the way we want, but when we consistently do the right things, no matter how easy or hard, we find the courage to accept life as it is without losing hope for the best. It is this balance of having the courage to try for something better and relinquishing the need for achievement as a condition of our happiness that provides a place where we can rest despite the challenges life presents.

For many years, not being able to find my mother and sisters felt just like someone had taken a pair of rusty pliers and ripped out a piece of my heart. It wasn't just something I disliked or wanted to be different, it was something that was slowly killing my belief in goodness, my hope for the beautiful things life has to offer. But, every so often, when we find ourselves in that dark place, a light suddenly comes on and nearly blinds us with its brilliance. That light brightened my world the day I learned my little sister Ally had left the FLDS.

Life doesn't always offer what we want, but if we learn the skill of acceptance, we find that while life can be full of hardship, there is never a lack of beauty.

I want to wish my little sister a happy birthday. Ally, as a child you were bright, beautiful, and inspiringly honest about the world we grew up in, and today you are that same amazing girl, only wiser, stronger, and more inspiring. Here's to this crazy, brutal, and beautiful journey called life.
