You can’t outwork trauma.

You can’t sleep it off forever. You can’t just “toughen up” and expect the hard calls, the deaths, the sleepless nights, and everything you carry home to have no effect.

And the fire service is finally learning that talking about mental health doesn’t make you weak.

This World Su***de Prevention Day, Firefighter Nation is continuing our focus on firefighter mental health through the lens of science.

We’re looking at what the research actually tells us about su***de, trauma, PTSD, sleep, substance use, resilience, treatment, and recovery in the fire service.

Not clichés. Not “suck it up.” Not feel-good advice.
Real research. Real conversations. Real options for firefighters who are struggling.

Because taking care of the people who run toward the worst days of someone else’s life has to include taking care of what those calls can do to them.

Know the signs. Know the science. Know that getting help is not the end of your career or a failure to handle the job.

Sometimes, getting help is how you stay in it.

Hey everyone! Just a friendly reminder from your friends at the fire department—it’s going to be getting cold out before we know it! So here are a few quick tips to make sure your home is warm and safe before the cold weather hits:

🔥 1. Get Your Furnace Ready
*Clear the area: Keep flammables, boxes, and clutter at least 3 feet away from your furnace or heater.

*Swap the filter: A fresh filter helps your heating system run safely and efficiently.

*Get an inspection: Have a qualified technician inspect your system for leaks or ventilation issues.

🚨 2. Check Your Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detectors
*Test the alarm: Press and hold the test button on each unit to confirm it's working.

*Change the batteries: Pop in fresh batteries for the heating season.

*Check the date: CO detectors expire after 5 to 7 years. Check the date on the back and replace any old units.
Proper placement: Make sure you have a working detector on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas.
Carbon monoxide is odorless, invisible, and harmless only until it isn't. A working alarm is your first line of defense!

Stay warm and stay safe, everyone! 🚒👨‍🚒

We recently received emergency drinking water through Anheuser-Busch Emergency Drinking Water for Wildland Firefighters program. This donation will go a long way in helping our firefighters stay safe during long calls, high heat, and wildfire response operations. We’re grateful to Anheuser-Busch and National Volunteer Fire Council for supporting volunteer departments across the country, and to 7G Distributing for delivering the water to our station!
