Creativity gives us a way to express ourselves, try something new, connect with other people, and sometimes discover a part of ourselves we didn’t even know was there.

That’s why we believe the arts matter so much.

At Beyond the Stage, we’re working to create more opportunities for people to learn, create, perform, connect, and find their place in the arts.

Because what happens on stage is important. But what it gives you beyond the stage is pretty incredible, too.

TBT to 2014. ❤️
These young performers were helping kick off the March of Dimes event, and this photo is a reminder of something that has been part of who we are for 13 years: using the performing arts to bring people together.

Community outreach has never been something we do simply because we can perform. It is an opportunity to give our students a different kind of stage, one where they can use what they are learning to contribute to something bigger than themselves.

When our Mountain City Creative Academy students perform at community events, they aren’t just gaining experience. They’re learning what it means to show up for others, be part of something bigger, share their talents, and use the arts to create connection. At the same time, they help bring energy, joy, and creativity to the people around them.

That matters to us as a nonprofit. We believe the arts should not exist separately from the community they serve. They should help bring people together, create opportunities for connection, and give young people the chance to see themselves as active contributors to the place they call home.

Thirteen years later, that commitment is still part of our work. And we’re just getting started. ❤️

When we talk about Dear Evan Hansen, it would be easy to talk about it as simply our next production. The cast, the music, the story, the rehearsals, and eventually the performances are all important. But for us, this production represents something much bigger.

Every child deserves the opportunity to experience the magic of live theatre. ❤️
For many children in our community, seeing a live show isn’t always possible. Cost, transportation, family schedules, or simply not having access to the opportunity can mean they never get to experience what happens when a story comes to life on stage.

That’s why our Read & Sing Program brings the performing arts directly into schools. We bring books to life through music, movement, storytelling, and live performance, giving students the chance to experience the magic of theatre right where they are.
Because access matters. And sometimes, that first experience with the arts can spark a love of storytelling, creativity, and possibility that stays with a child long after the show is over.

That is what Outreach is all about: bringing the arts to children who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience them.

Why does every child deserve art education?

Because what they learn through the arts goes far beyond the classroom or the stage.

It helps them become kind. Brave. Creative. Confident. Compassionate. Curious. Resilient. Courageous.

These aren’t just qualities we hope children have someday. They’re the things they need to navigate life, build relationships, find their voice, face challenges, and believe in themselves.

Art gives children a place to explore, take risks, make mistakes, express themselves, connect with others, and discover what they’re capable of.

What we build in children through the arts becomes part of who they are for life.

That’s why every child deserves access to arts education. ❤️

Beyond the Stage exists to help make that possible.

As we wrap up National Arts in Education Week, we wanted to leave you with this. 💚

Kayla was once an MCCA student. Today, she’s out in the world building a life of her own, and she shares something we never take for granted: the arts and the people at MCCA changed the trajectory of her life.

Brené Brown said it beautifully: children deserve a place where they can “rumble with vulnerability and their hearts can exhale.”

A place where they belong. A place where they can take off their armor. A place where they can be fully themselves.

That’s why we do what we do.

For students like Kayla. For the kids who walk through our doors today. And for all the young people who still need a place to belong, create, grow, and discover who they can become. 🎭💚

Arts education matters. The people who provide it matter. And the impact can last a lifetime.
