đź’™ Community Grants: Investing in Front Royal's Future

One of the most meaningful ways the Rotary Club of Front Royal serves our community is through our annual Community Grants program.

This photo from 2019 captures one of those special moments as the club presents a grant to the Warren County Community Center, helping support an organization that touches countless lives throughout our community. Through grants like these, Rotary dollars raised locally are reinvested locally—supporting nonprofits, educational programs, community initiatives, health and wellness projects, youth development, and much more.

Over the years, our Community Grants program has helped dozens of organizations expand their impact and better serve the people of Front Royal and Warren County. It is a powerful example of what happens when neighbors come together with a shared commitment to Service Above Self.

As we celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Front Royal, we're proud of the partnerships we've built and the lasting difference they've made in our community.

Frank Brooks Rees, Jr. (President 1975–76)

Frank Brooks Rees, Jr. served as president of the Front Royal Rotary Club in 1975–76 after more than two decades of dedicated Rotary service. A lifelong farmer and businessman, Frank brought a strong work ethic, humility, and commitment to community service to both Rotary and his everyday life.

During his presidency, Rotary continued strengthening its commitment to youth and international understanding, including highlighting the experiences of Rotary Exchange Students. Frank’s life reflected service beyond Rotary as well — operating farms in Markham and Rockbridge County while also serving in management roles with regional businesses. His dedication to family, agriculture, and community embodied the values Rotary has celebrated for generations.

🎖️ Celebrating More Than 50 Years of Service – January 16, 1998

One of Rotary's greatest strengths is the dedication of members who make service a lifelong commitment.

On January 16, 1998, the Front Royal Rotary Club recognized Dr. Bob Miller, Dr. Dixon Whitworth, and Henry Downing for more than 50 years of Rotary membership. Together, these remarkable Rotarians represented over a century and a half of service, leadership, fellowship, and commitment to the ideals of Rotary.

Their decades of involvement helped shape our club, mentor future generations of leaders, and strengthen the impact Rotary has had throughout Front Royal and Warren County. As we celebrate our centennial year, we honor not only the projects and accomplishments of the past century, but also the men and women whose steadfast dedication made them possible.

Thank you to these Rotary legends for showing us what Service Above Self truly means.

👔💙 Happy Father's Day from the Rotary Club of Front Royal! 💙👔

As we celebrate Father's Day, we honor the fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, mentors, coaches, and father figures who have helped shape our lives and our community.

Throughout our club's 100-year history, countless Rotarians have demonstrated that leadership begins at home. Through their example, they taught the values of integrity, service, hard work, and compassion—lessons that continue to strengthen families and communities across generations.

As Rotarians, we know that the greatest impact we can have is often not found in what we accomplish, but in the example we set for others.

"The greatest legacy a father can leave is not what he gives his children, but what he teaches them through his example."

Today, we celebrate all those who have embraced that responsibility and helped guide the next generation.

Happy Father's Day from the Rotary Club of Front Royal!

Did you know the Rotary Club of Front Royal sponsors a Polio Garden on Chester Street?

The purple flowers surrounding the sign aren't there by accident. They represent the "Purple Pinkie" — the mark placed on a child's finger after receiving the life-saving polio vaccine.

For more than 35 years, Rotary has led the global effort to eradicate polio. Thanks to the dedication of Rotarians and our partners around the world, polio cases have been reduced by more than 99.9%. We are closer than ever to ensuring no child suffers from this preventable disease again.

As we celebrate 100 years of Service Above Self, this garden serves as a reminder that while our roots are firmly planted in Front Royal and Warren County, our impact reaches around the globe.

The next time you're traveling down Chester Street, stop and take a look. Read the sign, learn about Rotary's fight against polio, and scan the QR code if you'd like to help us finish the job.

Together, we can make sure the next generation knows polio only through history books.

A Presbyterian minister and community leader, Dick served Warren Memorial Hospital, mental health organizations, Salvation Army, and the Jaycees. He was also a proud chaplain for district conferences. His ministry, community involvement, and family devotion made him a powerful example of servant leadership. Dick’s life reminds us that Rotary is at its best when grounded in compassion and purpose.

🇺🇸 Juneteenth – Freedom Day 🇺🇸

Today we commemorate Juneteenth, the day when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved Americans in Texas on June 19, 1865—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

As Rotarians, we recognize that peace is built on freedom, dignity, opportunity, and respect for all people. Former Rotary International President Clifford Dochterman captured this truth powerfully:

"A world half starving and half overfed will never be a world at peace. A world half sick and half healthy will never be a world at peace. A world half illiterate and half educated will never be a world at peace. A world half enslaved and half free will never be a world at peace. A world of prejudice, intolerance and distrust will never be a world at peace."

🕊️ On this Freedom Day, we reflect on how far we have come, honor those who struggled and sacrificed for liberty, and recommit ourselves to building a community—and a world—where every person is treated with dignity and has the opportunity to thrive.

🤝 Service Above Self. Peace Through Understanding. Freedom Through Opportunity.

🎩✨ Rotary Is Serious About Service… But We Also Know How to Have Fun! ✨🎩

For 100 years, the Rotary Club of Front Royal has been bringing together people who want to make a difference in our community. While service is at the heart of everything we do, fellowship and laughter have always been an important part of the journey.

This photo takes us back to August 31, 2012, when magician Joe Canneralla entertained our club with a performance that left members amazed, laughing, and wondering, “How did he do that?” Volunteers David McDaniel, Jeanian Clark, and Jerry Waller became part of the act, helping create a meeting that members still remember years later.

One of the great things about Rotary is that every meeting is a little different. Some days we hear from inspiring speakers. Other days we learn about important community issues. And every once in a while, we simply enjoy being together and sharing a few laughs.

The friendships built around those moments are what transform a service club into a Rotary family.

As we celebrate our centennial year, we're grateful for the countless programs, speakers, entertainers, and members who have made our meetings informative, meaningful, and fun.

What is your favorite memory from a Front Royal Rotary meeting? We'd love to hear it in the comments!

When the COVID pandemic challenged our community, Rotarians stepped forward.

Club members delivered food, medicine, encouragement, and hope to homebound seniors and vulnerable residents during an incredibly difficult time. This photo of Aneita Bryant captures the compassion and servant leadership that define Rotary.

Service Above Self never stopped — even during the hardest days.

Robert Munford Biggs, Jr. (President 1973–74)

Robert M. “Bob” Biggs, Jr. returned to Front Royal after WWII service and quickly became deeply involved in community life. He joined Rotary in 1966 and became president in 1973–74, guiding a year marked by strong membership engagement, youth programs, and significant fundraising for Warren Memorial Hospital.

A chemical engineer by training, Bob built a respected career at American Viscose and later FMC. His civic contributions included leadership with the March of Dimes Campaign, Warren Memorial Hospital, the Jaycees, Boy Scout Troop 52, and his church. Recognized with the Outstanding Young Man Distinguished Service Award, Bob exemplified community commitment and the values of the Rotary 4-Way Test.
