The Faces of Hope Project is based on the belief that sharing courageously about the reality of mental health has the power to heal, connect and transform. Through the transparency of their stories, these locals lead by example and give others with mental health challenges permission to open up about their own journey.

From pandemic isolation to master’s degree determination.

Introducing our newest Faces of Hope - Juan Guzman

He found the support system strength to pull himself up and out of darkness.

In Guatemala City, Juan Guzman was an 18 year-old first-year med school student. He was surrounded by friends and family in a city he'd known since birth and his compass was firmly set on a career as a psychiatrist. When Guzman and his parents moved to Summit County in November of 2014 to be closer to his older sister, he left that life behind.

Guzman easily secured a job at McDonald's in Silverthorne and was quick to make friends. Six years later, Guzman found himself wearing assistant manager badge.

When the pandemic hit in early 2020, McDonald's shut down. And so did Guzman.

A lot of people in the Hispanic community think going to a therapist means you're crazy," he says.

"Men never talk about their feelings and it's even more so for Hispanic men. Everyone can get so much out of talking to a therapist. They don't judge your color, your accent, your sexual preference - therapy is open for everyone."

Mental Health Awareness Month check in with an important vibe check. 🧠✨

Instead of the usual ‘how are you,’ let’s be real

Estamos arrancando el Mes de la Salud Mental con una importante revisión de nuestro estado de ánimo.

En lugar del típico “¿cómo estás?”, seamos sinceros.

What if we stopped trying to have it all together—and just showed up as we are? The learning curves, the in-between stages… they’re all part of being human. And they’re a little easier when we don’t go through them alone.
Let’s drop the pressure, embrace the flaws, and remind each other that imperfect is more than enough.

Let’s be imperfect—together. The Imperfect campaign shares raw, local stories to prove that “it’s okay to not be okay,” breaking the silence around mental health and encouraging everyone to seek support.

05/19/2026

Stop over-extending. Start exhaling. 🌿 Your peace is the only thing you truly own—don’t give it away today.

Deja de sobrecargarte. Empieza a exhalar. 🌿 Tu paz es lo único que realmente te pertenece; no la regales hoy.

Even when it’s quiet, even when it feels isolating, there are people who understand, who care, and who want to support you. Reaching out might feel hard, but it can also be the first step toward feeling seen again.

The Imperfect campaign humanizes mental health by sharing authentic stories from Summit County locals to break down stigma, reminding us all that “it’s okay to not be okay” and that there is strength in seeking support.

Peace is a practice, not a feeling. By setting boundaries today, you’re saving your energy for the things that truly matter. Your mental health deserves the space.

La paz es una práctica, no solo un sentimiento. Al establecer límites hoy, estás reservando tu energía para las cosas que realmente importan. Tu salud mental merece ese espacio.
