MOTHS: What You’re Missing After Dark

An obsessive's guide to the creatures of darkness, transformation, and astonishing beauty I Love Moths Hello, my name is Lior S. Carlson, and I love MOTHS. Like, genuinely, enthusiastically, stay-up-until-2AM-staring-at-a-sheet-in-the-woods love moths. Over the next 14 days or so, I'll be guest blogging all about MOTHS in anticipation and countdown to the 2nd Annual Moth Night at the Museum....

We've got new blooms popping from the pollinator garden we put in last year!

New gardens don't always look fantastic the first year. They're still spaced out and this is the first time the flowers are facing the world with established roots.

But this is an excellent sign for the future! We can just picture it next year...beautifully lush 😍

Insect Repellant Awareness Day & Beautyberry

Today, June 3rd, is National Insect Repellant Awareness Day! Though the discussion is usually for visitors to our sunny island in summer circles around sunscreen, insect repellant is equally important! Living in the United States, we often have a skewed view of the significance on the impact of illness transmitted by insect bites. We either have flailing and wailing about diseases like Chagas that we're unlikely to ever encounter unless we spend time camping in the Central American nations, or we have a very low key murmuring of concern about common diseases as if the concern is so far from a possibility that insect repellant is a showing of weakness....

We had an unexpected treat Tuesday afternoon.

The last visitors of the day were two lovely women, Andrea and Margie. Sisters coming to vacation and check out the museum.

Andrea was looking at the flutes we recently got in from Joe Mareka (you may recall we posted him playing for us recently as well). When she asked permission to play, we didn't expect her to give the flute such a lovely voice!

She played several songs for us as she debated whether she and the gorgeous flute of maple with turquoise inlay were destined for each other.

As she continued to deliberate, she told us how she's part of a group larger group with tribal connections that helps indigenous women rediscover their connection outside of Western views of womanhood!

When she made the final decision to make the flute a new companion, she graciously allowed us to video a song to share with all of you.

We hope you enjoy the experience from wherever you are as much as we did!
