TxSAIGE SOGIE Champion Award recipient, Jon Culpepper; Michael DeVoll Award recipient, Brian Kennedy
FRISCO, TX, November 27, 2024—Pride Frisco proudly announces its Co-Founder, Jon L. Culpepper, was the recipient of the Texas Society for Sexual, Affectional, Intersex, and Gender Expansive Identities (Txsaige Division of TCA) SOGIE Champion Award at the 2024 Texas Counseling Association's (TCA) Professional Growth Conference in Dallas, Texas, during which TxSAIGE was named TCA’s 2024 Outstanding Division. The award is presented annually to a lay person or professional counselor outside of TCA who is an advocate for counseling within the SOGIE (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and (Gender) Expression) community.
“The SOGIE Champion Award is a way for TxSAIGE to promote those working to secure LGBTQIA+ equality and mental health access across Texas,” Michael Lesher, TxSAIGE Director. Past recipients include former Houston-based Montrose Center CEO, Dr. Ann Robison. “Destigmatizing and increasing access to affirmative, competent mental health services to LGBTQIA+ and other intersectional, underserved communities is life-preserving work, and I am deeply grateful to TxSAIGE for this tremendous honor and their leadership in this field,” Jon Culpepper, Pride Frisco Co-Founder, Board VP and Treasurer.
TxSAIGE also presented its Michael DeVoll Award of Excellence in Counseling to Brian Kennedy, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) at Room for Change, a Dallas-based mental health provider to whom Pride Frisco refers community members who seek affirmative counseling services. The award’s namesake, Michael DeVoll, was a founding leader of TxSAIGE and past president of TCA. As a leader in the counseling profession, Michael founded a camp for q***r teens and small groups for the teen’s parents, was an advocate for SOGIE legislative issues, and an avid educator of LGBTQIA+ issues.
“As a therapist and mental health educator, my passion is not only to provide a space where q***r individuals feel seen, heard, and validated, but also to advocate for their right to be treated with dignity and respect in every aspect of their lives. I believe in the power of affirmative therapy not only to heal but also to empower LGBTQ+ people to challenge societal norms, dismantle the stigma they face, and embrace their true selves. It’s about creating a refuge where clients can thrive and advocating for the broader change needed to ensure their voices are uplifted and their rights are protected,” Brian Kennedy, LPC, Room for Change.
