Some stars leave a little extra sparkle behind.

After the loss of their daughter Kelly this summer, Mike and Margaret Smith wanted to honor her memory in a way that reflects the community she cherished. For more than 20 years, Kelly was an important part of Timberline Adult Day Services, sharing her laughter, kindness, and unique light with everyone around her.

In celebration of Kelly's life, the Smith family has launched a campaign to support Timberline and the opportunities it provides for so many individuals and families.

Great job Bustang!

Getting where you need to go should feel easy, comfortable, and independent for every Coloradan. I’m proud that Bustang is expanding accessibility with two new free tools, Aira Explorer and Aira ASL, connecting riders who are blind or have low vision, Deaf, or hard of hearing with live, professionally trained interpreters right from their phones.

Whether someone needs visual assistance navigating from a stop to their seat or an ASL interpreter to help communicate along the way, these services are another meaningful step toward making public transportation work for everyone. Accessibility is about more than getting from one place to another. It’s about giving people the freedom and confidence to travel on their own terms, and I’m so glad to see Colorado continuing to move that work forward.

Wings for All® is an airport rehearsal program specifically designed for individuals on the autism spectrum or with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. The program gives families the chance to experience all the steps involved in the air travel process in a safe, but realistic environment. The WINGS for All itinerary…
Families (individual with IDD + up to 3 additional family members or supports) arrive at the airport around 10am and are greeted and checked-in for the days’ events by volunteers from the Colorado Arc Network (CAN), United Airlines, DEN airport and TSA staff, then will proceed to check-in at the ticket counter to receive their boarding pass, go through TSA security, and board a plane (that does not take off). A reception will be held for all participants with light snacks and refreshments after deboarding the plane.

This event is FREE to all participants, but families are responsible for paying their own costs to travel to and from the airport. Space is limited and all families must pre-register online (please let us know if you or someone you know needs assistance with registration…we’re happy to help!) in order to pass through TSA security. HCBS is a vital resource for our families!

HCBS. You might have heard this term before. It stands for Home and Community-based Services. What it really means is “Medicaid home care.” It’s through these services, people can live, work, play, worship, engage, and contribute to their community.

The new DOJ opinion says that federal disability laws may not require states to provide services that would allow people to live in their communities – meaning that it could be harder to get services and avoid being locked up in institutions.

We have come too far to turn back.

Families of children with disabilities already struggle to find childcare and early learning programs that will enroll and support their child. Now, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is proposing changes that could make one of the country’s most inclusive early childhood programs less accountable for doing so.

Head Start was including children with disabilities a decade before federal law guaranteed their right to a public education. Its performance standards require programs to address assessments, accommodations, exclusion, IEP coordination, and other parts of serving children with disabilities. HHS wants to remove many of those detailed requirements.

In a new op-ed for The 74, our CEO Katy Neas warns that disability laws are not enough if Head Start programs lose the rules that make inclusion possible. Under the proposal, programs would no longer have to assess every child’s development, accommodate every child’s participation, follow the same protections against suspension and expulsion, or help families navigate the IEP process. It would also remove the specific rule barring programs from turning children away because of a disability or chronic health condition.

For decades, Head Start has shown that disability inclusion in early childhood education can work. Weakening the standards that help programs deliver it would move us in the wrong direction.
