NC and East Tennessee are in DIRE need of blankets with freezing temps approaching next week for the region. Anyone wanting to send blankets that way reach out and I will meet anyone who cannot travel. We have connections with Gods Pit Crew and will be doing works through them to get resources in the hands in need. For those of you who don’t know Gods Pit Crew is out of Danville, Virginia and travels everywhere in times of disaster brining relief. Hope Medical in Galax, Virginia is also going to be a drop center for blankets. Please if you can let’s help send some warmth to the people who have lost so much already. Please like, share, and spread the word. Fries Fire or Hines Tire can also be a point of contact for drop offs as well.

Happy Saturday! Hope everyone is well and safe after the storm! Here is a post from our superintendent about the plan for next week:

To Grayson Parents and Staff:

This is a lengthy post, so please read ALL of it. Our community has been hit with a devastating amount of rain, wind, and destruction from the Hurricane.

Please note the following:
Grayson Schools are closed for at least Monday and Tuesday. IF power returns, and roads are operable, we will try to open Wednesday. Right now all power is out at our 7 schools.

This closure will count as “virtual days”. NO assignments will be sent out by teachers. We are asking all students to contribute any community service they can to their family members, grand parents, and especially elderly neighbors. The clean up in our county will be a massive task. Math, reading, and test scores are the least of our worries right now! Our friends at the Virginia Department of education feel this is a great idea, and have been very supportive.

Some of our high school clubs and organizations will be out this week helping in those various civil service clean ups. We also have several repairs that need to be made by our maintenance department at all of our schools. This will take at least 2 to 3 days, or more, in some cases.

We will need at least 2 days to reconfigure some bus routes that will need to be altered due to roads being out or washed away. We will update that process as it developes with VDOT and contact parents if your child’s bus route is altered.

If power comes back on at the schools, we plan to provide food pick up for students. We also have showers available for students to use if needed, after power is restored.

Lastly, communication is limited in our county. Towers are down in several areas . We plan to send out an email this morning to all staff and students. I need this post reposted on X and snap chat as well, please. Also, please take a picture of this and send it to family members who are not on social media, and who have children in the school system. Just pretend it’s the 80’s and 90’s and actually pick up the phone and speak to someone. 😎

I will continue to send updates as needed. We wanted everyone to know ahead of time what we are dealing with, and give them an opportunity to plan ahead for next week.

Please repost!
🔱

God Bless,

Kelly

Sadly our region, county, and the town of Fries have had felt a devastating blow due to Hurricane Helene. We will be canceling tomorrow’s horse show at the Jamie Hyatt Arena in Fries, VA due to massive, and widespread damage throughout the region. A rain date will be announced at a later time. Thank you for your patient and understanding during this very difficult time for our community.

Please 👀👀👀 horse show spectators and riders: We have spent a month preparing the arena for the show tomorrow but unfortunately the 4” of rain has left standing water in the arena and we simply cannot work it to have it safe for use tomorrow. We have continuously reassessed throughout the day and the water still is standing, and you will sink up just walking into the pen, so we are making an early decision to move the horse show until next Saturday, September 28, 2024. Same start time, same class line up.

NOTE: The family fun day is still a go. September 21, 2024 we will still be having vendors and activities setup for the family fun day starting at noon at The Jamie Hyatt Arena. The arena will be closed off.
