MEDALLION HUNT: Adams-Friendship FFA Leadership Team presenting the Bork family with their prize for finding the FFA Week Medallion.

Here is how the clues helped...

Heartland Farms is located off of Hwy C in northern Adams County. It is currently farming approximately 27,000 irrigated acres where they raise potatoes for Lays chips. They also grow sweet corn, canning peas, green beans, and soybeans. They have buildings for storage (large rectangles) for over 5,500,000 hundred weight (Cwt) and can ship out up to 120 semi truck loads per day!
The original farm was settled in 1873 by August Pavelski, great grandfather to current CEO Richard Pavelski when he emigrated from Poland. The youngest Pavelski was the inspiration for the Lays’ Super Bowl commercial. She is pictured at the end of the famous Lays potato chip commercial where the cute little girl grew her own potato.
There is also a processing plant that will turn potatoes into potato flakes located right at the farm headquarters. The farm headquarters is called Heartland Farms’ Farm Operations Technology and Training Center. Many community members visit the Training Center for community meetings, training and field trips. As they enter the building, they walk by a sign created with brick pillars and the beautiful heart shaped pond. Of course, the medallion “Lays” at the base of the pillar where Jenna’s eagle eyes found it. Congratulations to the Bork family, who visited the Ag Room to collect their prizes last night.
We hope you enjoyed learning about a small portion of the agricultural industry here in Adams County!

Clue #5
All Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resource Programs (formally known as vocational agriculture) have three parts. The classroom for training, the FFA for learning in and out of the classroom, and the Supervised Agricultural Experience Program for practicing what they were trained for. We all love agriculture and FFA. Our medallion Lays at the base of a pillar welcoming all to learn. From our medallions view and high in the sky you will see a liquid heart, surrounded by the circles that represent the irrigation fields throughout Adams County.

Clue #4
Adams County is split down the middle by a main route that helps move supplies to the farms and businesses. The commodities from those farms cruise these routes to the processing companies.
This 40 mile section of highway gets our Medallion to C a portion of the land used to grow produce and the land used for recreation. At this time of the year, it may look like there is no action on the farms, however there is a lot of action. Thousands of semis are moving stored commodities to be processed and sent to stores where we can stock our homes with food, clothing, and other things we need.

Clue #3
Many of the farms and businesses in Adams County can trace their roots back multiple generations. Family is important to agriculture and to the family hosting the Medallion this week. The family states they are a fifth generation farm, with the sixth generation helping every chance she can.

Clue #1
The medallion is found at a business that provides plant commodities to our community and to the nation. Did you know that Adams County produces a variety of plant commodities that you can eat with only a little processing? As you drive around the county you will find potatoes, cranberries, peppers, onions, asparagus, pumpkins, sweet corn, peas, green beans, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, and more. Other Adams County grown plant commodities require more processing to become useful products for our homes. Trees, corn, soybeans, rye, wheat, and other plant commodities help make our homes warm, cozy, and safe.
