“If you are not laughing, you are crying.” This was the motto Dwight Soeffker lived by during his two-year battle with cancer. No matter what life threw his way, Dwight’s goal was simple: to spread joy, laughter, and positivity, especially at his doctor’s visits. He succeeded beyond measure.

Dwight was diagnosed with stage 4 soft tissue sarcoma after months of unexplained hip pain. Even though he faced intense treatments, surgeries, and the brutal reality of a rare, aggressive cancer, his laughter never faltered. In the toughest moments, Dwight's spirit remained bright, especially when surrounded by his daughter, Sydney, his best friend and primary caregiver.

Whether on the pickleball court or dreaming of the Bahamas, Dwight's passion for life was unshakeable. His final days were filled with love, humor, and the warmth of those who adored him.

In honor of Dwight, his daughter, Sydney has set up the Dwight Soeffker Named Fund, ensuring his light continues to shine and help others battling sarcoma.

Jenny’s interest in oncology began as an oncology scribe, inspiring her to pursue a career in the field. She earned her undergraduate degree from Duke University and is continuing her journey in oncology at the University of Minnesota Medical School

Therese was a professional nurse her entire career, in practice, teaching, and administration. Therese was the Executive Director of the Third District Nurses Association for a decade and served in leadership at both the state and national level.

She sustained this leadership even through a time when she was fighting her own personal battle with leiomyosarcoma. Therese passed away on October 11, 2013, at home with her family, three daughters and six vibrant young grandchildren.

Rein in Sarcoma Patient & Family Committee brought patients and survivors together for a beautiful afternoon in the sunflower fields at Fresh Acre Farms in Monticello, MN. Our first-ever Sunflower Field Photo Shoot was filled with sunshine and smiles.

This free photo experience gave sarcoma patients and survivors an opportunity to step into the fields and create lasting memories with loved ones. It was wonderful to see our community come together in such a meaningful setting.

A very special thank you to our volunteer photographer, Leni for generously donating their time and talent to capture these moments. We are also grateful to Fresh Acres Farm for welcoming Rein in Sarcoma to their farm and supporting this first-time event. Their generosity helped make this experience possible for our sarcoma community.

We hope this is just the beginning of a new RIS tradition. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make our first sunflower photo shoot such a memorable day!

New Ewing Sarcoma Research Offers Hope for More Personalized Treatment

Researchers at Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center and the Children’s Oncology Group found that a blood test may help predict relapse risk in Ewing sarcoma.

The test looks for circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA)—tiny pieces of tumor DNA found in the blood. Combined with other information about the cancer, ctDNA helped researchers identify patients at low, intermediate, or high risk of relapse.

This research could help pave the way for more personalized treatment strategies in the future.

Meet Angitha Reji, RIS Jan Maudlin Sarcoma Scholar!

Angitha is a medical student at the University of Florida College of Medicine. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of South Florida, where she continued to develop her interest in oncology.

During her undergraduate years, she volunteered at Moffitt Cancer Center and later worked there as a Tech Transfer Associate, helping advance the commercialization of translational research so that promising new therapies could reach patients.

We’re thrilled to welcome Angitha to the Rein in Sarcoma community and look forward to all she will contribute to sarcoma education, research, and awareness!
