For the most part, school is out for summer in MN. Want to know a great summer activity for kids? Recycling education and recovering materials in your community!

If you are going on a walk, why not take a paper bag along and collect items which were left on the ground? Children can identify materials such as paper, aluminum cans or plastics ( #1, #2, #5) which can be taken to a recycling bin, while other items can be disposed of in a waste receptacle. Education and beautifying our environment? It’s a win-win!

Our kids are sponges for information, so let’s commit to teaching them about the importance of recycling.

Since we've had 6 calls today alone, now seems like a good time to remind everyone that RAM doesn’t do direct hauling of residential recycling, nor do we negotiate with companies to provide any city’s/county’s pickup services.

While we can help you find a number to call if you had a missed collection, we strongly recommend reaching out to your city/county, or the company who picks up your curbside recycling; the response time will be much quicker though direct communication with one of those entities.

Were you aware that roofing shingles can be recycled?

Organizations who accept shingles for recycling, such as RAM members Dem-Con Companies, LLC & LRS, are crucial for those products to have a second chance at life.

While there are some newer, emerging industries looking at recycled shingles for utilization, most recycled shingles go into highway/roadway applications or into making new shingles.

We had a voicemail left for us over the weekend from a resident who wanted to know if they needed to separate aluminum cans from other metal cans such as steel/tin.

At recycling recovery centers, mixed recycled items get sorted through many different methods. With cans, aluminum is separated on the line using a rotating eddy current, which repels aluminum, pushing those items to a different area; while steel/tin cans are separated by magnets, due to the qualities of those metals.

To recap, both types of cans can be placed in the same collection container as the sorting process routes each material type to their correct destination for proper separation.

Old tires are recyclable, but they aren’t collected from homes/apartments through the curbside system.

Many cities and counties accept tires for recycling, as do specialized companies in certain geographic areas. Fees and eligibility for drop-off vary from location to location, so make sure to do some homework before making a trip. This will help you recycle the tires correctly and cut down any confusion at the drop-off location.

Gardening season is upon us! Please remember that plant pots and trays do not belong in your curbside recycling bin.

Many local garden centers and “big-box” home improvement stores accept/collect used plant pots to be reused again in future years.

Happy growing and thanks for keeping your pots out of your curbside bin!
