It’s nettle season! Yay! Start eating them now, and you’re almost guaranteed to have reduced allergies, and maybe none at all. They can be used like any other leafy green in cooked dishes. Once heat hits them, the stinging is deactivated. You can also toss them RAW (gasp!) in smoothies, just make sure they’re blended well. Some people like to dry and powder them. Try mixing the powder with toasted, ground sesame seeds for a great salad and soup garnish!

It’s that time of year, again...Bark harvest! Woohoo! Why is this so exciting (other than it means spring is nearly here)? Because there are invaluable plants that offer their best medicine through their bark! For example: willow, dogwood, and wild cherry. Here are willow twigs being stripped, to be used for tincture, tea, and smoking mix!

Happy New Year! In addition to being a great season to dig roots (think dandelion, dock, Oregon grape), it couldn’t be a better time to harvest usnea, both because it gets flung out of trees in the winter winds, and because this season often calls for usnea’s medicine. Truthfully, usnea is one of my all time favorites. :)

Usnea herb is used for fungal or staph infections, as well as strep and urinary tract infections.

What to do with ten pounds of hawthorn berries? Process into sauce, cook down with apples, and enhance with rose, cardamom, and vanilla of course! Super potent (and delicious) witchy sauce!

A wee bit of dock root processing. Once chopped, it went in a jar of vinegar. There it will sit til it's a potent vinegar tincture brew. Great liver support! It will be ready just in time for a spring cleanse! More will be added as the garden gets weeded. ;)

May all our hearts be strong and resilient! The frosts this week inspired me to do one more hawthorn berry harvest! It may not look like it, but that's about ten pounds! Cooking down and straining to make heart-happy hawthorn apple sauce, with a hit of salal and Oregon grape. Labor of love.

It's a great time to harvest rose hips! Nothing brightens up a drizzly walk like these little beauties. You'll be so grateful to have them the next time you need a little dark-season pick-me-up. Try combining them with lemon balm for a soothing, immune-boosting tea.

Set out to harvest rose hips, got distracted by madrona berries. Should have brought a bigger basket!

Came home with a rough throat and a mildly compromised body after a few days of cold camping and campfire smoke. Gathered up a few plant friends and set some tea to simmer: mullein, pearly everlasting, Cali poppy, pine, hops.
