Sexual violence can impact every part of a survivor's life.

Every survivor's experience is different. Some impacts may be immediate, while others may emerge over time. There is no "right" way to respond to trauma, and no timeline for healing.

Understanding the wide-ranging effects of sexual violence helps us replace judgment with compassion and support survivors with the care and respect they deserve.

If you or someone you know has experienced sexual violence, support is available. SAFE San Juans is here to listen, believe, and support survivors wherever they are in their journey.

Does this sound familiar?

Washington state legally recognizes coercive control as a form of abuse.

Abuse is not always physical! For many survivors, it can look like being controlled, watched, isolated, manipulated, or made to fear the consequences of upsetting someone.

Coercive control can slowly take away a person’s independence, confidence, and sense of safety long before anyone else notices something is wrong.

Naming this form of abuse matters. Being believed matters. And recognizing the patterns matters, too.

If you’ve ever felt like you were constantly walking on eggshells, changing yourself to avoid conflict, or losing pieces of who you are in a relationship, you are not alone.

"I've never seen them act like that."
"I just can't picture them doing that."
"But they seem so nice."

These are some of the phrases survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault hear that can devalue or dismiss their experiences. The truth is that abusers often do not show their abusive behavior to outsiders. They hide it carefully, and when survivors come forward, they may not be believed because the person causing harm is seen as:

• A likable community member
• A valued family member
• A friendly coworker

But when we choose to believe the version of someone that the public sees rather than the reality a survivor is sharing, it can cause further harm. It can increase isolation, deepen self-doubt, and make it even harder for survivors to seek help or leave abusive situations.

At SAFE San Juans, we believe survivors, and we encourage others to do the same.

If you are experiencing domestic violence or sexual assault/abuse and are seeking support, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Want to Support Survivors this Weekend? Here's How...
This weekend, donors have a chance to receive $250 from OICF to donate to the grantee of their choice during the FunDay Monday event through GiveOrcas 2026. All weekend, donor names will go into a hat, and three names will be drawn on Monday, May 18th, for a chance to win!

Your generous contribution will aid survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault as they work to rebuild their lives after bravely seeking help to overcome the impacts of their traumatic experiences.

Unique Donor Day is today!
That means, the grantee with the most unique online donations today will receive $1,000 from OICF! This special challenge rewards the nonprofit that secures the most individual donors, not the largest donations. That means even $10 can make a huge difference in helping us reach the top spot.

Your generous contribution will aid survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault as they work to rebuild their lives after bravely seeking help to overcome the impacts of their traumatic experiences.

You are allowed to make your own choices.

If you’re in or have experienced an abusive or unhealthy relationship, it’s important to remember that your autonomy matters, no matter what anyone else has told you. You are allowed to set boundaries, change your mind, ask for help, or not be ready yet. You are allowed to prioritize your safety, your needs, and your healing in whatever way feels right for you.

There is no “right” way to survive or move forward. What matters is that you have options, and you deserve support without pressure or judgment.

At SAFE San Juans, we’re here for you wherever you are in your journey. Whether you want to talk, explore options, or just be heard, you don’t have to do it alone.

💜 Reach out anytime. You deserve support on your terms.
