''Barbershop Harmony Society

Today is officially Society Honorary Lifetime Member Dick Van D**e's 100th birthday! Happy birthday, Dick, thank you for all the joy you have brought to our lives, and for being a true friend of barbershop. May all your renditions of Happy Birthday To You be in four-part harmony.
Enjoy this look back to the 2009 International Convention in Anaheim when comedy icon Conan O'Brien had a brief brush with fame and got to meet the legend himself right in the middle of the Harmony Marketplace. Rumor has it that while Conan and his team were filming a bit for his (then) The Tonight Show, he heard that Dick Van D**e was at the convention and asked if he could meet him, so their respective teams helped coordinate a quick meetup.
It was a pretty cool moment for everyone who was there. There's also a rumor that the produced bit of Conan's visit to Anaheim International is floating around out there somewhere ''

Once again under the direction of Angel Michaels, carols old and new, silly and sublime, in perfect harmony will ring the rafters and sing in the Christmas season. ''

It is with heartfelt sorrow that we say good-bye. We are so grateful to have had Rick as a fellow Chordsman and his leadership as Board President.

''Richard “Rick” Rubin | September 1, 1944 – June 22, 2025

Rick Rubin lived on San Juan Island for 30+ years after retiring from a career in media sales and management. He and his long-time companion, Patty Rouen, came to the island in 1989 and built their home at Journey’s End Way. After Patty’s death, Rick remained on San Juan and eventually met Angel Michaels in 2018. They were joyfully married in May 2024.

Over the years, Rick was a member of or volunteer for many organizations on the island: Peace Island Hospital, Mended Hearts, ACLU, SJI Yacht Club, SJI Sailing Club, Power Squadron, the Senior Center and San Juan Island Preservation Trust. He sang baritone from time to time with San Juan Singers, the seasonal Island Carolers, and the Island Chordsmen. He also worked for many years at Browne Lumber.

Rick’s gentle smile, silly sense of humor, and truly attentive way of listening will be missed by many. He is survived by his brother, Andy and sister-in-law, Anette and nieces and nephews, all living in Madison, WI; on the island are his widow, Angel Michaels, many cherished friends, and his golden-doodle, Emmett.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the San Juan Island Grange Hall on September 28, 2025 from 3-5:30 p.m. You are invited to bring a flower or a stray key (or both). Attire is our usual island casual; shoes are required, hats are encouraged. Reception to follow.''

A celebration of Holly Harber's life will be held on May 18th (Sunday), 2:00 pm, Jackson's Beach pavilion. Everyone please come with all your stories and fond memories❣️ UPDATE

"On Sunday:
• Scott/Peter: Opening words of welcome and introductions of family members
• Sound Vibrations sing "Ain't'a That Good News"
• Scott/Peter: Sharing some stories and insights into parts of our mom’s life that islanders might not know
• Holly’s friends sharing their favorite stories/memories of our mom (the more the merrier!)
• A poem about Holly will be read, written by Merle, a past long-time member of the Chordsmen, now in Missouri
• Sound Vibrations sing "Take Me Home"
• Closing words and prep for scattering ashes
• Island Chordsmen sing "Sing Your Way Home" while Scott & Peter scatter Holly's and her dog Topper's ashes in Griffin Bay''

Hope you had a lovely Valentine's Day❣️ UPDATE - Thank you all who ordered in-person and by phone Valentines! We delivered singing Valentines from 9:00 to 6:30 and met so many nice people and we went home with smiles on our faces.It's wonderful to sing together again.
