“Everybody who’s doing these small farms, we’re creating an alternative to walk away from this big food system.”

At Watmough Bay Farm on Lopez Island, Abe Gates and Derek Eisel are raising chickens, pigs and goats, growing vegetables, and cultivating a food system centered on community.

In the final episode of our film series, hear about the work the Food Share on Lopez Island and Watmough Bay Farm are doing to build a resilient local food system.

“Know your farmer, know your food. That’s real! All my CSA members come in every week to pick their food up out of our cooler. They see us working in the field, adding compost, there’s never any sprays going on. They can come in here and know how their food is being produced and that’s important.”

During the Covid-19 Pandemic, Hailey heard her community’s call for locally grown food and scaled up food production at West Beach Farm. In the third episode of our series, Hailey shares both the uncertainty she feels at the end of each year “are we really going to do this again?” and the ways she and local farmers support one another, “we’re not competing with each other, we’re competing against the food truck that comes in on the ferry every week.”

This is the second episode in our series, hear from all the farms at https://www.youtube.com/

Join us in watching the second short film of our four-part series. Find the full series at https://www.youtube.com/ and support local at the SJI Farmers Market on Saturdays at Brickworks.
