Angelina Jolie is working with UNESCO and Guerlain on a Women for Bees initiative that will ultimately build 2,500 bee hives and restock 125 million bees by 2025—while training and supporting 50 women beekeepers in their own operations. In March 2021, Dan Winters photographed Angelina using the same technique Richard Avedon employed for his iconic portrait, "The Beekeeper" over 40 years ago. https://on.natgeo.com/3Org3ql

🐝 The honey bee hive consists of workers, drones, and a queen, with the worker bee being the versatile member responsible for multiple tasks in the colony. So when we stop to smell the flowers in our garden or wander through a lush field, it's easy to perceive worker bees as gentle creatures, gracefully drifting from petal to petal like a summery breeze. Yet, don't let their delicate demeanor deceive you.

🐝 Yes, they are the smallest in the hive, but they're like superheroes, constantly on a mission to accomplish their tasks, working ceaselessly daily. These tireless bees are the lifeblood of the hive, propelling pollination forward and sustaining our world.

🐝 The value of a worker bee extends beyond what meets the eye. With diverse responsibilities and many roles, these buzzing wonders can be found anywhere in the hive. Despite their brief lifespan of a mere 30 days, a worker bee takes on numerous responsibilities, such as keeping the hive tidy, nursing the queen, crafting intricate architecture, maintaining ventilation, providing security as a guard, and ultimately foraging. Now that's what we call a versatile skillset! 👍

This lovely poem written by Mary Oliver describes the experience of tasting honey as a beautiful journey:

Honey at the Table

It fills you with the soft
essence of vanished flowers, it becomes
a trickle sharp as a hair that you follow
from the honey pot over the table
and out the door and over the ground,
and all the while it thickens,
grows deeper and wilder, edged
with pine boughs and wet boulders,
paw prints of bobcat and bear, until
deep in the forest you
shuffle up some tree, you rip the bark,
you float into and swallow the dripping combs,
bits of the tree, crushed bees—
a taste composed of everything lost,
in which everything lost is found.

Did you know?

A single mammalian bee usually visits about 7,000
flowers a day, and it takes four million views
to produce a kilo of honey.

did you know?

The bee lives less than 40 days, visits at least 1,000 flowers, and produces less than 1 teaspoon of honey. For us it is only 1 teaspoon of honey, but for the bee it is a lifetime. We invite you to raise awareness.
