In rural Ghanaian, Honduran, Nicaraguan, and Panamanian communities where Public Health Brigades operate, common diseases exist that greatly affect the health of community members, which can be alleviated by improving home infrastructure and personal hygiene education. Public Health Brigades combat these easily preventable diseases through low-cost sustainable infrastructure projects utilizing locally-sourced materials and designs that are implemented by local experts.

Hey everyone! My name is Lily and I'm a senior at the University of Oklahoma and GB's current Social Media Intern.

My experience with GB began my freshman year when I volunteers with Public Health in the community of Fray Lazaro, Honduras.

With my heart full of memories and the people of the community, I got on a plane back to America after my brigade knowing I would most likely never see any of them again. The following year I was re-assigned to do more Public Health work in Fray Lazaro. Now after more than two years (as I prepare to go on my fifth brigade) I get to revisit Fray Lazaro.

Today, Fray Lazaro is a fully holistic community! By empowering people and giving tools of sustainability, GB has changed the lives of both the people of Fray Lazaro and mine. Follow my brigade this weekend and into next week by watching the GB stories on Instagram! 🌎

After partnering with the community of Los Encuentros de San Gabriel on with Global Public Health Brigades since December of 2016, GB Nicaragua had a bittersweet goodbye as we wrap up the Public Health phase of our Holistic Model in this community.

Throughout the last 6 months, volunteers have partnered with 142 families to construct 142 hygiene stations, 101 concrete floors, and 25 eco-stoves. While Global Brigades is transitioning out of Public Health in Los Encuentros de San Gabriel we are excited for future partnerships in Business and Water!

This transition also means welcoming volunteers into a new Public Health community, La Corneta. La Corneta is a partner community that GB Nicaragua has a long-standing relationship with, having completed a recent water system in September 2016.

We are hopeful and excited to be working together on yet another program within GB's Holistic Model!
