Leadership Counsel for Justice and Accountability

Leadership Counsel for Justice and Accountability Leadership Counsel will fundamentally shift the dynamics that have created the stark inequality that impacts California’s low income rural regions.

Amidst abundance, California is home to what has been referred to as the ‘Appalachia of the West,” among the lowest income cities and towns in the nation, families exposed to myriad environmental hazards, water too filthy to drink and wastewater oozing from dilapidated septic systems. While hundreds of thousands of our neighbors fight for the most fundamental elements of a healthy and thriving com

munity, local and statewide officials too often perpetuate the phenomenon of two Californias through practice and policy, and through acts and omissions. Our experience in rural California has taught us that as long as the most vulnerable populations remain silent and sidelined environmental degradation will continue, infrastructure will crumble, and the most basic of services and amenities will remain beyond the reach for those in need. And, municipal, regional and state-wide policies will continue to further disadvantage low income, rural communities through programs, funding formulas and eligibility criteria that favor wealthier regions. Through community organizing, research, legal representation and policy advocacy we will impact land use and transportation planning, shift public investment priorities, guide environmental policy, and promote the provision of basic infrastructure and services. In collaboration with local and statewide advocates, Leadership Counsel for Justice and Accountability will reverse trends that have reigned throughout our history and confront the inequality and deficiencies that continue to plague this state.

Merced residents are tired of being told there isn’t enough funding to support housing programs while families continue to face unsafe living conditions, displacement, and risks of homelessness.

On Monday, residents will come together to urge Councilmembers to invest in meaningful solutions that keep people housed.

Every budget is a reflection of how YOUR tax dollars are being prioritized. So make sure to show up and voice how you want City money to be used.

Thank you to the Senate for proposing to fully fund . We urge leadership to agree to this funding proposal to ensure that all Californians have access to safe and affordable drinking water.

As 431 water systems continue to fail across the state and as we face rising water rates, residents in remind us of the positive impact that fully funded SAFER can have.

Rosalina lives in 3 Palms, a small mobile home park in ’s District 3, located alongside the construction of the High-Speed Rail.

Despite the major development happening right next to them, residents including children and seniors still have to navigate dirt roads and unsafe sidewalks everyday. They are forced to walk beside speeding cars and trucks because the City of Fresno, California fails to acknowledge the lack of basic infrastructure needed to keep them safe.

Rosalina and her neighbors are asking the Council to invest in communities like theirs by allocating at least $300K along with a $2.1M carryover of Council funding designated for public works projects toward safer streets and public safety measures.

Budget hearings are happening all week long! You can help shape where City funding goes and make sure your community is included.
