Our latest employee spotlight series highlights Kayla Robinson, Environmental Compliance Specialist at CalPortland.

Kayla's path wasn't traditional — she spent nearly a decade in medical device sales before earning her certification as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist and finding her footing in the materials industry. Today, she oversees environmental compliance for nearly 10 ready-mix concrete facilities across Fresno, Tulare, and Kings Counties.

What's stuck with her most? How long people stay.

"You don't see that unless people are being taken care of. It says something about the stability these jobs provide."

On a Central Valley morning, Kayla Robinson might begin her day walking the grounds of a concrete plant, checking equipment and site conditions, talking with managers about permits or inspections. Later, she may be back in her Fresno office reviewing regulatory updates or preparing compliance report

Check out our first Employee Spotlight, featuring George Cummings!

What makes Cummings especially valuable to his shop is not just what he knows, but how he learns. “I won’t let anything really get past me if I don’t understand it.”

See the entire spotlight here:

George Cummings did not grow up imagining himself inside a machine shop. He grew up in Coarsegold, California, a small mountain town about 15 minutes south of Yosemite. For years, his world revolved around restaurants and college coursework — not steel, calipers, or CNC machines. “I work at PNM ...

ICYMI: $100M Scannell Industrial Project Breaks Ground

“We see firsthand how projects like this create ripple effects that go far beyond the construction site,” said INVEST Fresno Chairman Ethan Smith. “They bring a wide range of jobs to local families, generate revenue to support city services, and send a strong message that Fresno is a place worth investing in. As our community continues to grow, we need more smart, forward-looking development to meet the evolving needs of our people and economy.”

Scannell Properties, a national developer, broke ground Wednesday morning on the $100 million Westgate Industrial Center, a landmark that local leaders say shows Fresno’s readiness for large-scale industrial growth.

ICYMI: Fresno Approves $2.4 Billion Budget

Fresno, Calif. — Last week, the Fresno City Council approved a record-setting $2.4 billion budget, despite the absence of federal pandemic funds and a delayed $200 million state commitment. Mayor Jerry Dyer closed a $50 million gap through 5% departmental cuts and a 6% employee vacancy rate.

Council also advanced Dyer’s $100 million “pave now, pay later” infrastructure plan, approving steps to fund major road and neighborhood improvements through a 30-year bond.

The 2025-2026 budget illuminates a central truth: without robust economic development — generating stable tax revenue, attracting private investment, and spurring job creation, Fresno may struggle each year to fund essential services and capital projects, reinforcing the urgent imperative for sustained growth.

Fresno approved a $2.4 billion budget with cuts, partial project funding, and a major $100 million paving plan.

ICYMI: A Stronger Fresno Starts with Smart, People-Focused Economic Growth

In a recent opinion editorial published in The Business Journal, INVEST Fresno Chairman Ethan Smith highlights the urgent need to prioritize economic growth that directly benefits Fresno residents.

With Fresno’s unemployment rate nearly twice the state average and the cost of living continuing to rise, the editorial emphasizes that now is the time for city leaders to double down on economic development strategies that create good-paying jobs, expand the city’s tax base, and improve quality of life across the board.

As the Mayor and City Council begin budget discussions, INVEST Fresno urges them to put job creation and long-term growth at the center of every decision.

In Fresno, it’s hard to ignore the numbers — and even harder to ignore the people behind them. With our unemployment rate nearly double the state average, more than 38,000 of our neighbors in Fresno

The City of Fresno has named Cliff Long as its new Economic Development Director, bringing in a seasoned leader with a proven track record in growing local economies and building strong public-private partnerships. With a projected $20M deficit in 2026 and sales tax revenues falling short, Fresno must prioritize economic development to create good jobs, attract industries, and support essential services for working families.

Cliff Long is taking over as Fresno’s new Economic Development Director.

ICYMI: $100M Industrial Project Set to Bring 1,000 Jobs to Southeast Fresno

INVEST Fresno was proud to engage with city leadership in support of the project, which capitalizes on Fresno's built-in location and workforce advantages, expands the city's tax base, and creates good-paying jobs for Fresno residents.

A $100 million, 1,000-job industrial warehouse project in southwest Fresno can proceed after environmental activists withdrew a lawsuit against it.
