The article largely takes an agro-economic perspective and reveals some vulnerabilities that can impact the region's agricultural and foods sectors:

Gustavo Ferreira, a U.S. Army major with a doctorate in agricultural economics from LSU, is helping military decision-makers gain insight into how agriculture-related issues can affect military actions across the globe.

ADAPT recommends "The Wolves of Helmand," a memoir of author Frank Biggio's deployment to Afghanistan in a Civil Affairs capacity, supporting 1st Battalion, 5th Marines. A must-read for any Civil Affairs practitioner.

Overall, Biggio conveys a great deal of information in a compact, highly-readable form. He touches lightly, but from the heart, on serious topics which makes this an accessible book for even the least militarily-savvy reader. An informed reader will appreciate the tale, while less-knowledgeable read
