Something our Friends might be interested in: an update on Huntington Beach's Freedom to Read lawsuit. Huntington Beach's parent/guardian review panel is the very one the Fresno County Board of Supervisors sought to model Fresno's after, which they then thought better of with the passing of the Freedom to Read Act in 2024.
An interesting note: thanks to the legal fees accrued, and the fact that they can no longer move books, Huntington Beach has considered slashing library hours and services, closing the library entirely, and, it appears, even attempted to privatize the library and outsource staffing to Library Systems and Services, a for-profit corporation, but LSS withdrew their bid. (This is likely the same company Supervisor Bredefeld is interested in outsourcing the Fresno County Public Library's staffing to.)
