On Saturday February 4th approximately 30 Middle School students competed in the US Department of Energy’s Regional Science Bowl hosted by Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)- Fresno Chapter & Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) Schools Program at Fresno State University. This event was sponsored by PG&E, MESA & SHPE
The Science Bowl competition, a fast-paced question-and-answer Jeopardy style double elimination tournament designed to test their knowledge in biology, chemistry, physics, energy, mathematics, earth science, and space science. By participating in Science Bowl competitions, students are encouraged to excel in science and math and to pursue careers in those fields.
The Fresno Regional Science Bowl is part of the National Science Bowl® competition coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. SHPE- Fresno has had the honor of hosting this event since 2008; Since its inception, approximately 800 central valley students have participated in this fast-paced question and answer contest.
The winning Team will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington DC to participate in the National Science Bowl representing California’s Central Valley. This year Granite Ridge Middle School Team 1 won the regional competition with Alta Sierra Middle School Team 1 placing second.
The Regional Science Bowl is an event which requires many volunteers. This year the 40+ volunteers consisted of SHPE Engineering Students from UC Merced & Fresno State along with Engineering Professionals from PG&E, CalTrans & MESA.
