AIMS Center for Math and Science Education We design innovative approaches, materials, and resources to engage teachers and learners across contexts in playful and creative STEM activity.

Who Are We

The AIMS Center for Math and Science Education at Fresno Pacific University is dedicated to understanding the existing research on how children “come to know” their mathematical and scientific knowledge; to use what we learn from research to inspire teachers to deeply thoughtfully consider how to change their own classroom practice – passionate, reflective teachers who will take their students’ thinking seriously; and to broadly share that which is learned with the educational community. What We Do

- Evaluate existing research to identify outcomes that we believe could change the learning experiences of students in Central San Joaquin Valley classrooms

- Translate research into practice in the classroom

- Provide ongoing professional learning opportunities to educators and on-site instruction to academic coaches toward the utilization of research outcomes in the classroom

Why We Do What We Do

A wealth of research exists that involves studying the subject of “How Kids Come to Learn”, but only a small portion of that research has been implemented in practical ways. We want to see more of that research made applicable for teachers and the classroom setting.

Earlier this month, we hosted an Institute as part of the Count Play Explore (CPE) initiative. CPE aims to support educators by providing tools and resources to advance STEAM learning experiences across their organizations. Our team members led presentations and coaching sessions, organized event logistics, and even had a chance to get creative alongside participants! We are honored to participate in this multi-agency effort to make STEAM more accessible across California.

Did you know today is the longest day of the year? The summer solstice is a perfect time to teach about Earth’s tilt, shadows, and solar energy. Here's a fun way to teach about shadows and sunlight:

SHADOW DRAWINGS 😎

✏️ What you need:
• Paper
• Figurine or toy
• Pencil
• Crayons or markers

✅ What to do:
1. Find a sunny spot outside and place a figurine/toy on a sheet of paper. Trace the outline of its shadow with a pencil.
2. Rotate the figurine. Notice how the shape and size of its shadow changes. Use your imagination to think about what the outline of the figurine’s shadow looks like on your paper then create a picture.
