For Mai Der Vang, writing began with a love of books and grew into a way to explore her family’s history and share Hmong stories. Mai der Vang talks about growing up as the daughter of Hmong refugees, finding her voice through poetry, and why she hopes young people will keep pursuing their dreams even when the path feels uncertain.

Telling The Hmong American Story
Episode 11: Women In Leadership - Kaying Hang

Kaying Hang came to the United States as a three-year-old refugee from Laos in 1976. Her family moved from Georgia to Rhode Island, Wisconsin, and eventually Minnesota in search of education, opportunity, and a better future.

As the oldest of seven children, Kaying grew up helping her parents farm and sell produce at farmers’ markets. Their sacrifices helped support her education and instilled in her the discipline to pursue college. She later earned a full scholarship to Brandeis University and completed a master’s degree in public health at Boston University.

Her career took her from Minnesota’s refugee health program into philanthropy, where she helps direct resources to organizations serving struggling families and underserved communities. Kaying shares how her identity as a Hmong woman and the daughter of refugees prepared her to enter influential spaces—often as the only Hmong person in the room—and advocate for those whose voices are not always heard.
