Dr. Vicky Xiong Lor arrived in Minnesota at seven years old as the oldest daughter in a family of nine children. From learning English and helping her parents navigate life in America to earning her doctorate and becoming an educator and community leader, her journey reflects determination, sacrifice, and service.

Dr. Lor discusses the expectations placed on Hmong daughters, the importance of family support, and the barriers Hmong women face in education and leadership. She also shares why preserving the Hmong language, culture, and history is essential for future generations.

Her story reminds us that we can pursue our dreams, lead meaningful change, and still remain deeply connected to our roots.

Telling The Hmong American Story
Episode 5: Pieces of History - Lar Yang

Lar Yang has spent nearly 30 years using art, design, and storytelling to serve the Hmong community. After arriving in the United States at four years old, Lar grew up with many questions about the Hmong experience, the Secret War, and why Hmong families came to America.

His desire to understand these stories eventually became a lifelong commitment to collecting photographs, documents, artifacts, and firsthand accounts through Hmong Story 40 and the Hmong Story Legacy Collection.

Lar reflects on his journey as a graphic designer, producer, entrepreneur, and community advocate. He shares the importance of supporting one another, doing what you love, and preserving our history so future generations can understand where they came from.
