💧 How often should you test your private well water?

In honor of National Water Quality Month, we asked Cindy Brookes, Senior Rural Development Specialist, to share her expert advice.

If your home relies on a private well or spring, it's recommended that you:

✅ Test your water every year for:
• Total Coliform bacteria (including E. coli)
• Nitrates

E. coli should never be present in drinking water. Because it originates from f***l contamination, it can indicate that harmful pathogens have entered your water supply.

You should also test for metals, minerals, and other substances such as lead, copper, iron, manganese, calcium, magnesium, sodium, fluoride, chloride, and sulfate every five years, unless previous test results were above acceptable levels. In that case, annual testing is recommended.

Regular testing is one of the simplest ways to protect the health of your family and anyone else who drinks your water.
