Currently the funding for our school counselor (Ms. Vang) and the Library Media Tech position (currently me, but I'm retiring in June) will run out in June of this year. There is no funding for Elementary school librarians or counselors in the current budget for next year.
This means the Brier library and all other elementary school and middle school libraries will close at the end of the school year. They will not reopen in the fall unless parents express to the district that keeping libraries open is important.
This also means that Brier and all other elementary schools will not have school counselors next year. If parents think that this is important, they need to speak up now.
October is the month to give input. The survey can be found here: FUSD Budget Survey
If parents want to voice their opinion on the budget crisis, the time is now. If having a school library or a school counselor at Brier is important to parents, they need to say so in the survey. One of the questions asks what 3 school programs are important to you and you want the school board to consider saving. This is where you need to write libraries or school counselors if that is something you want your children to have access to next year. The board will need to figure out where to make cuts for next year by January.
