On May 28th, Heather Pollick, Executive Director, at the Sandusky County Land Bank presented at our weekly Kiwanis luncheon. Heather shared that many people are unfamiliar with what a Land Bank does, and she is passionate about helping the community better understand its impact. Formed in 2015, the Sandusky County Land Bank works to reduce blight, address unsafe properties, and improve neighborhoods throughout our county.
Although the organization operates with a small team of just two people, Heather and her staff are committed to improving quality of life in Sandusky County through the redevelopment and revitalization of properties.
The Land Bank oversees several programs, including demolition, vacant lot, side lot, commercial lot, and rehabilitation property programs. Most properties are acquired through the tax foreclosure process, which is often lengthy and complex, but plays an important role in returning neglected properties to productive use. A special thank you to Angie Ruiz for arranging this informative program and Rachel McCoy for the write-up.

At our weekly luncheon on May 21st, Captain Mike Mezinger with the Fremont Fire Department gave a presentation at our weekly Kiwanis meeting on the importance of CPR and how everyday citizens can help save lives.. Cpt Mike has been with the Fire Department for over 30 years and is the Community Affairs Officer. Each year, there are over 500,000 cardiac arrests and knowing basic CPR can be the difference between life and death.

He walked us through the three simple steps of CPR:
βœ”οΈ Check – Is the person breathing or moving?
βœ”οΈ Call – Call 911 immediately.
βœ”οΈ Compress – Begin chest compressions

Captain Mike also demonstrated these steps for our members, helping reinforce how important it is to act quickly in an emergency. Thank you to Captain Mike and the Fremont Fire Department for sharing this valuable information with our club and community! A special thank you Angie Ruiz for scheduling this program and to Rachel McCoy for capturing this important and worthwhile program.

Thank you to Scarlett Sterling, Executive Director of the Sandusky County Humane Society, and Janet Quaintance, Board Chair, for speaking at our May 14th Kiwanis luncheon meeting!
We learned more about the important work the Humane Society does as a non-profit organization serving our community. The shelter operates as an owner surrender, closed admission shelter, meaning they accept pets from owners who can no longer care for them, but only when they have the space and resources to provide proper care for each animal.
We also heard about their new Pet Food Pantry program, which helps families who may be struggling financially keep their pets fed and at home during difficult times.
Fore more information visit their website at www.humanesanduskyco.org
Thank you to Sara Sherick for scheduling this informative program and to Rachel McCoy for capturing their message.

Dana Roca, an ambassador for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society spoke to the club on April 30th about MS. Dana was diagnosed with MS and shared the symptoms that a person may experience from the disease. This includes vision problems, emotional moments, stuttering, falling, forgetting things, depression, numbness, heat and cold intolerance, and the sensation of being tightly hugged to name a few. MS is called the "snowflake disease" because no two cases are alike; each person's symptoms and progression vary. It is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks the protective myelin sheath of nerve fibers. There is no cure but medicine can help curb the symptoms. MS is more common in people ages 20-50 years old although in can occur in children and the elderly. Dana is on the NW Ohio Community Council which is a board made up of eight people including neurologists, MS patients, and therapists. They meet several times a year to discuss how to spread the word about the services available to people with MS. One of the first thoughts of every MS patient is how long will it be until they are wheelchair bound. Dana is taking 22 disease modifying therapies (DMT) everyday to help with her symptoms. Fundraising events planned to support MS in Fremont include Karaoke Contest at Moonshine Nightclub on Sept. 19, 1-5 pm, Tribute to Legends Dinner Theater at Fremont Country Club on June 26 at 4 pm, and a Wine Tasting Tour on Sept 26 departing from the YMCA parking lot at 10 am and returning at 5 pm. For more information on these events, call 804-467-9881. Thanks to Angie Ruiz for arranging this program and to Mike Jay for capturing this very worthwhile message.
