National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, only 20 years old, died after suffering a critical gunshot wound while on duty in Washington, D.C.

She volunteered for a shift so fellow soldiers could go home for Thanksgiving — a choice that showed exactly the kind of heart she carried.

Her father kept vigil at her bedside until she passed.

Beckstrom served in the West Virginia National Guard and had been deployed to Washington, D.C., assisting with federal support duties.
