Fremont Area Community Foundation Our Community Foundation serves to improve the quality of life for all people in Newaygo County.

Fremont Area Community Foundation started as the private Fremont Foundation in 1951 and was reorganized 20 years later into its current legal structure as a public community foundation. The community foundation is comprised of more than 500 separate funds including two supporting organizations and three geographic affiliates. It is one of the largest community foundations in the United States on a per capita basis, serving a population of approximately 50,000 with net assets of over $229 million.

It’s Tuesday and today we remember Frances Fahrer. Frances spent 90 years in Newaygo County and worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the area of housing assistance. Through her estate, Frances created a fund to help protect, preserve, and sustain land resources in Newaygo County.

This week we honor Our Next 75 members Tom and Char TenBrink. Tom and Char grew up in Fremont and Hesperia and retired from Ge**er. They originally intended to create a scholarship through their estate plan, but when they learned about the Community Foundation’s build-a-fund program, they decided to start their fund right away. “We’re excited about being able to help somebody,” said Tom. “Giving through the Community Foundation seemed like the best way to help the community.”

During our 75th anniversary year, will you partner with us to Give 75 to our Community Endowment Fund? This fund is an unrestricted or discretionary fund, which means that no matter how community needs may change in six months or 75 years, the Community Endowment Fund will be there to help. Local organizations like Love INC and the Dogwood Center didn’t exist in the 1950s and 1960s, but unrestricted funds that did are still helping fund grants to these and many other organizations helping people today. Today on we remember Christopher Caris. Chris graduated from Fremont High School and went on to Ferris for his bachelor’s degree. He enjoyed nature, fishing, and photography. His family—including parents Ted and Jeannie Caris—and friends created a fund in Chris’s memory to continue his legacy and help others explore similar interests.

We’re excited to welcome Scott Christie to our staff! Scott joins us as our new Director of Philanthropic Services after working for a direct service organization in northern Kent County. Scott has lived in the Newaygo County area for 10 years and loves rural life and the authentic and hard-working people in our area. “I’m looking forward to getting to know the community even better,” said Scott. “I’m excited to meet the people and organizations we serve in Newaygo County and in our affiliate counties.”

This week we honor Our Next 75 members DuWayne Schuler and his late wife Jean Schuler. They moved to Ryerson Lake from Kent County and quickly got involved in the community. DuWayne served on the library board and volunteered with the Friends of the Library, a group Jean led for years. Jean also enjoyed volunteering at Camp Newaygo and being part of local garden and quilting clubs. They created the Jean Schuler Education Fund in honor of Jean’s career as an educator. “I wanted something that would reflect what Jean had been involved in,” said DuWayne. “She was an extraordinary teacher and had a profound influence on many young lives.”
