After 15 years, our Senior Development Director Wes Miller is leaving the Community Foundation to pursue new opportunities. Wes began his work with us on the community investment team before transitioning to working directly with our generous donors. He has provided valuable leadership for our philanthropic services team and overseen impressive growth in our number of endowed funds. We are deeply grateful for Wes’s years of service and wish him the best as he begins his next chapter.

This week we honor Our Next 75 members Laura Johnson and the late Harry Johnson. The Johnsons moved to northern Newaygo County in the early 1970s and became fervent supporters of Big Jackson Public Schools. Their three sons attended there and then their grandson. “We don’t have an abundance, but our bills are paid and I think it’s important to share what you have,” said Laura. “Big Jackson has an endowment fund, and we wanted to give to it to support the school. This school community is a little family, not just a school.”

In 1990, to support the expansion of philanthropy in Michigan, we partner with emerging community foundations in two neighboring counties. The Big Rapids Area Community Foundation—now Mecosta County Community Foundation—and Osceola County Community Foundation become our geographic affiliate foundations. Through this partnership we provide services like investment management, administrative oversight, financial management, and public reporting to our affiliates.

After 11 years with the Community Foundation, Maria Gonzalez is leaving our staff to become president and CEO of the West End Home Foundation in Nashville, Tennessee. Among her many responsibilities here, Maria has guided the work of our Bridging Generations Fund—dedicated to supporting local older adults—and will now lead a private foundation that supports organizations serving older adults in Middle Tennessee. Maria joined our staff in 2015 after serving on our Board of Trustees. While we are very sad to see her go, we are so excited for her as she pursues this wonderful new career opportunity!

Today on we remember the Dodge family, including siblings Mildred, Reathel, Richard, Tom, and Leona. They grew up on their family’s farm in Garfield Township, in a house built by a great-uncle after he returned from the Civil War. Tom became the next generation of his family to farm there while Reathel and Mildred both became teachers. They created two funds at the Community Foundation: a scholarship and a fund to help local children and families.

This week we honor Our Next 75 members Judy Johnson and the late Bill Johnson. Bill and Judy created a scholarship at the Community Foundation that would follow a student throughout their college career. “We think higher education is transformative,” Bill told us in 2020. “Judy and I are both from what I would call humble beginnings. Our lives were transformed by a higher education opportunity. It’s important to us to try to help others have the same opportunities we’ve had.”
