Newaygo County Autism Community We strive to raise awareness by advocating, supporting and having resources throughout Newaygo County for individuals with ASD and their families.

We are parents, school professionals, and community members who actively seek to support and advocate for persons with ASD and their families. We do this by providing support groups, social & community activities, information & resources, and raising public Autism awareness th

For one afternoon last Sunday, an entire Broadway theater belonged to autism families.

That’s not a figure of speech. For its Autism Friendly Performances, TDF buys every single seat in the house, then makes them available at discounted prices only to families, schools and groups that include autistic people. No stranger behind you sighing. No one to apologize to.

Inside, the show itself changes. Sudden loud noises, strobes and spotlights are reduced. The house lights stay dimmed but on. Break areas staffed by autism specialists sit just outside, so anyone who needs to step out can, and come back when they’re ready. Families can download visual guides beforehand showing the theater and the characters, so nothing arrives as a surprise.

Sunday’s show was Ragtime at Lincoln Center, the first autism-friendly performance in that production’s history. It sold out.

And it was only the opening of TDF’s largest season yet, ten productions in all. Six are announced so far: Hadestown on August 23, The Great Gatsby on September 27, Maybe Happy Ending on October 25, the Christmas Spectacular with the Rockettes on November 8, and The Lion King on January 31. Four more come next spring.

This isn’t new, either. The program started in 2011 with The Lion King and has quietly run for fifteen seasons.
