In order to familiarize the students with various issues that affect the community, guest speakers present discussions in their field of expertise. By exploring these issues, students develop a deeper understanding of the
community Personal leadership skills and learn the impact of leaders in the community. Typically each session will include two to three guest speakers followed by an interactive discussion with students. Community Issues include:
Education
Participants will learn the importance of the organizational structures, services and challenges of the public and private education system in Fremont. Community leaders will address and help participants identify the needs and problem areas facing our educational system and the resources available to address these issues. Other topics covered are the importance of multi-cultural sensitivity and its impact on society. Quality of Life
This session will explore the factors within the community that promote and affect the quality of life, as well as identifying what quality of life issues are of importance to Fremont and its surrounding areas. Topics discussed focus on a wide range of issues that impact the quality of life of individuals who live and work in the region. Public Safety, Social Issues & Challenges
The objective of this session is for students to become aware of the public safety and legal entities in the area, the challenges they face; and to understand the process and purpose of conflict resolution. Areas of discussion may include: Problems and resources in public safety, high-tech crime and its impact on business, intervention and interaction of law enforcement agencies, Emergency Services and Disaster Preparedness. Media, Marketing and Communication
Important areas of study include how media influences and impacts society; ethical issues involved with the media, now and in the future; how to access and effectively utilize local and regional media; and how to identify and understand positive communication skills in a technological society. This session will focus on dealing with the media, sharpening communication skills, and presentation skills. Economic Development
This session will include discussion on the economic balance within the City and its surrounding areas with the goal to develop a better understanding of Fremont's business and communities. Students will explore the issue of long range economic planning and the variables that affect it. Environment and Challenges of Growth
In this session participants consider the key environmental challenges associated with growth, discuss effective land use planning, and develop a clear understanding of the evolving challenges we face in the Bay Area including the impacts of congestion, transportation, and housing costs on the economic vitality of the region. Local Government and Regional Stewardship
An effective community leader understands the organization and structure of municipal government and other governing agencies in one's city and region. In this session, participants will examine the political environment in Fremont, the City government structure, the county and regional government structure and its relationship to the City, and understanding the perspective of makers on various issues. Health and Human Needs
In this session the class explores the challenges faced within the health care industry, including local organizations and their mission in the community. The concept of stress reduction as a factor in long term individual and organizational success are examined, as well as addressing situations that demand value-based, ethical decisions.
