SAVE Act Silences Eligible Voices at the Ballot Box
On February 11, 2026, the House passed the SAVE Act by a vote of 218–213 after stripping the contents of a bipartisan veterans bill and using it as the vehicle for the legislation. The Senate is expected to take up the bill this week.
The SAVE Act would require documents like a passport or birth certificate to register to vote or update voter registration—documents that an estimated 21 million eligible voters do not have easy access to.
These requirements would disproportionately impact working-class Americans, including rural voters, naturalized citizens, young voters, women whose names have changed, seniors, and communities of color who already face barriers accessing official records.
The United Steelworkers believe elections must be secure, but every eligible voter deserves a fair and equal voice at the ballot box. The SAVE Act creates unnecessary barriers that could silence millions of working people.
Rapid Response will soon call on USW members to urge their U.S. Senators to oppose the SAVE Act.
