A day like this takes more than good intentions. It takes volunteers who arrive early, donors who help make the work possible and supporters who carry the mission into their communities.

That is seva in practice.

On August 16, together they brought the National Walkathon to life in support of a mission that continues every day: school meals for children in India.

We made the local news.

Local 10 was at Markham Park in Sunrise, Florida for the first-ever Akshaya Patra USA National Walkathon — one of 12 walks happening across the country this year, all for the same reason: getting more meals to more classrooms in India.

That's the whole idea. Show up, walk together, feed kids who'd otherwise go to school hungry.

A national event is built long before anyone reaches the starting line.

Akshaya Patra USA is grateful to Capgemini and The Chetu Foundation for supporting the 2026 National Walkathon.

We also thank the chapter leaders, volunteers, fundraisers, participants and supporters who gave this national effort their time and care.

The event was one day. The mission continues: supporting school meals and education for children in India.

Some of us celebrate Independence Day 8,000 miles from home.

Distance changes how we celebrate. It does not change what we carry forward.

Akshaya Patra serves 2.35 million meals every school day. Those meals are delivered in over 25,768 schools, from 78 kitchens across 16 States and 3 Union Territories in India.

Today, we celebrate India. Tomorrow, supporters in 15 communities across the United States will walk together for that mission.

Happy Independence Day, India.

On Sunday, August 16, supporters in 15 communities across the United States will walk in support of school meals and education for children in India.

Before the walkathon, participants can create a personal fundraising page, share why they are walking and invite friends, family and their community to support them. Participants who raise at least $20 qualify for a special thank-you gift.
