Despite innovative advances in medicine, significant disparities still exist in how heart conditions are diagnosed and treated in women. These gaps contribute to rising rates of coronary heart disease among women.

For her Girl Scouts Gold Award project, Nandini Sitaraman, a junior at Mission San Jose High School, is partnering with Dr. Jennifer Tremmel, Medical Director of Women’s Heart Health at Stanford University, to raise awareness of female-specific risk factors and the differences in treating cardiovascular diseases in women versus men. By understanding these differences, participants will gain the knowledge needed to take proactive prevention measures and confidently advocate for themselves within the healthcare system.

Whether you're aiming to better understand your own heart health or support others, this webinar offers valuable insights to help reduce risks and improve cardiovascular health outcomes for women. We hope to see you this Friday!

February is Black History Month. The founder of Black History Month, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), has chosen the theme “A Century of Black History Commemorations” for 2026, honoring the 100th anniversary of the first Negro History Week established by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1926.

Events held across the country will focus on the impact of Black history and life in shaping modern society:

Centennial Focus: The 2026 theme marks 100 years of efforts to study and honor the contributions of people of African descent.

Significance: It serves to highlight the importance of telling an accurate, inclusive history, especially during efforts to limit Black history in schools and public culture.

Celebration of Progress: It recognizes the evolution from a weeklong observance to a month-long celebration, highlighting Black history in fields like athletics, science, and music.

Goal: The theme challenges society to understand how these commemorations have transformed the status of Black people.
