Our Students 4 LEAF summer program recently welcomed the International Rescue Committee (International Rescue Committee San Jose ) and 12 young people who have recently immigrated to the United States for a day at the LEAF Urban Farm.

Together, we started a microgreens tray, harvested fresh vegetables, and prepared a yummy, healthy lunch. It was a beautiful opportunity to build community, get their hands in the soil, and share a meal together.

We’re grateful to the IRC for spending the day with us and helping make the Farm a place where young people can connect, learn, and grow!

Are you involved with a local community group? We’d love to collaborate with you. Please get in touch using the link in the comments!

One of the questions we hear most often from our community members is, "What can I plant right now?" 🌱

The answer has less to do with the season on the calendar and more to do with temperature. Successful gardens are built by paying attention to soil conditions, planning ahead, and choosing plants that thrive in your local climate.

At the LEAF Urban Farm, we're always thinking a season ahead. While summer crops are still producing, we're already preparing for fall and winter planting. Crop rotation, cover crops, mulching, and careful timing all help us grow food year-round while building healthy, living soil.

Read our latest blog from our volunteer blogger Christine to learn how to plan your garden through the changing seasons, along with practical tips from LEAF volunteer Alan on growing successfully in the Bay Area.

Over the past few months, the Centerville Library garden has transformed right alongside our Moon Gardening group. Together we've planted beans, tomatoes, potatoes, watermelon, and kale, and now some of those plants are taller than our LEAF educators.

We've learned about worms, turned compost with help from our chicken neighbors, taken home tomato starts, and shared fresh harvests along the way. Every month has brought something new to discover, and we're excited to keep growing together.

What's been your favorite part of Moon Gardening so far, and what will you see this month?

Meet Sawyer, LEAF’s Chief Relaxation Officer (CRO) and Lead Mouser at the LEAF Urban Farm. 🐈

If you've spent time at the farm, there's a good chance you've spotted our beautiful Siamese girl lounging by the bee shed, keeping an eye on the gardens (and frequently napping on the job).

In honor of National Cat Day, we're giving a shoutout to one of our favorite farm residents. Sawyer has become part of the LEAF community, making sure each volunteer is compliant with treats and a sweet scratch behind her ears.

Got a chief mouser of your own? Drop their name in the comments — we'd love to hear who's keeping you company today. 🐾

As the need for fresh, healthy food continues to grow, so does our commitment to expanding what we can give back to our community.

A huge thank you to our local electricity provider, Ava Community Energy , for their generous support of LEAF's nursery and garden operations. Their contribution will help us grow more produce, strengthen our urban gardens, and move us closer to our goal of doubling our food donations to 7,000 pounds in 2026.

Partnerships like this make it possible for us to grow more than food. They help us invest in a healthier, more resilient community. Thank you, Ava Community Energy, for helping make that work possible.
