December 21st, 2024 Japanese Friendship Garden Volunteer Service Recap

Today, a few BRI members and I went to go help out with the Japanese Friendship Garden at Kelly Park. We got there at around 8:45 and checked in, waiting another 15 minutes for everyone to show up. At around 9:00, the people supervising the program gave us a rundown of all the tools and jobs we needed to do. Then, we split up, and we each went our own separate paths.

I chose a hand cultivator in order to remove the w**ds that had invaded the area. There were two pools of water in different areas that were in need of cleaning. The water had drained, and there were w**ds and plant matter everywhere. A bunch of people were focused on collecting all the fallen leaves and sticks that had gathered together. In the meantime, I carefully pulled out w**d after w**d and made sure that I did not touch the plants that were meant to be there.

At 10:45, we had a quick 15-minute break. After the break, I switched over to the plant matter duty, and started shoveling. We loaded many different tarps full of green waste onto the back of their truck, and transported it out. Because we had worked so diligently, we managed to finish our work an hour early. After checking in our hours, we all went home.

On November 26, 2024, BRI Youth joined other eager library-goers at the Fremont Main Library main door at 1:00pm. After gathering suitable reading materials from all genres and reading levels, there was a quick set up, moving tables and chairs to form groups of tables. Different books were displayed on each.
Within the 2 hours, including setup and cleanup, I read aloud to 5 children. Together, we read books like Pete the Cat, Pinkalicious, A Big Guy Took My Ball, and The Pigeon Has to Go to School. Each session with the children took around 15 minutes, with thorough reading from cover to cover for at least 2 books each time. Finally after picking out a book to read and reading it, the children were able to select a small gift to take home with them.
For a mere 1 hour of fully active time, the number of books read to curious children who wandered rests at a solid 8 books to 5 children. Today was a day of gratitude and humility, supporting and nurturing children's curiosity and interest towards reading, as well as learning a little about the life of the other reading alongside you.

July 26, 2025 PVSA Award Ceremony
This Saturday, BRI hosted its annual President's Volunteer Service Award Ceremony. Our members gathered to celebrate their shared efforts and accomplishments. As the event began, our members introduced themselves, and socialized through a shared interest: helping the community. Over the past few years, BRI Youth has been involved in food banks, donation drives, cleanup events, recycling events, shelters— and various other community initiatives— which were made possible through shared time and effort. Additionally, our youth members bonded through their shared passions for various activities and sports. We are grateful for all of our youth members!

Jan 18 2024 Tech Session at the Carlton Senior Center

The tech sessions at the Carlton Senior Center have been overall pretty successful. During each session, we've had the participation of approximately 6-8 seniors seeking assistance with navigating their devices. In our initial session, we encountered seniors with older devices that weren't previously researched. To address this, we recorded their questions to better prepare for the next session.

In preparation for our second session, we faced a challenge as the senior center removed our flyer, resulting in fewer seniors being notified. Nonetheless, a handful of individuals still sought assistance. Notably, one attendee required help with a new Chromebook, while another needed guidance on using an Apple phone. Despite the notification setback, we were able to provide valuable support to those who attended.

July 20th, 2024 Second Harvest Sort Event

Every day, food banks are constantly distributing boxes of fresh produce to help out families in need. Behind the truckloads of boxes overflowing with fresh fruits and vegetables are volunteers who help to gather, pack, and distribute all the food. This Thursday, July 20th, 2024, members of BRI Youth volunteered at Second Harvest Food Bank to help out behind the scenes and sort boxes of fresh produce.

First, we were quickly instructed on how to sort the food and keep the food and work area clean. Every volunteer was in charge of a specific fruit or vegetable, and we put a large scoop in each box that passed by in the conveyor belt. Each box contained melons, zucchini, apples, avocados, radishes, carrots, onions, potatoes, and many more. Our work wasn't laid back; it was fast-paced and more like a gym session. In all, our shift helped to pack over 250 boxes, which is more than 6,000 pounds of fresh produce! Afterward, we all helped to sanitize and sweep the area.

Overall, we had a fantastic time volunteering at Second Harvest Food Bank. We were happy to meet the friendly staff and super impressed by their sanitation measures. It was a wonderful experience and I would recommend helping out at Second Harvest Food Bank whenever you get the chance!

April 13, 2024 Adobe Homeless Center Cooking

We arrived and checked in at 10:30, then went into the kitchen to start work. A few BRI members were already there. We planned
to make spaghetti, salad, fruit, and mashed potatoes, so we got to work.

One group started out by peeling the oranges and putting fruit into boxes, making sure to put an equal amount in each one. Another group, the one I was part of, got to work peeling and cutting the potatoes in order to mash them later on. Once we got done with that, I took a small break and the other people placed the spaghetti noodles into the pot of boiling water. They also heated up some tomato sauce to go with it.

The noodles ended up getting slightly burnt, but we got rid of the burnt ones and started serving. Our drink of choice was some kind of orange juice, and gave the homeless servings of our food. We ended up having too much, so we took some of the leftovers home. All in all, it was very productive.

2024 March 4th, Second Harvest Food Sorting
Many people have donated canned foods such as carrots, peas, and soup to food drives, but where does it all go? Last Monday on March 4th, 2024 from 6:00-8:00 P.M, BRI Youth members and parents volunteered at Second Harvest Food Bank to help sort food. In the process, we also learned a lot more about how food banks benefit from donations, organize their food, and maintain cleanliness.
Our group volunteered to help sort donated food into bags. Each bag contained rice, lentils, peas, canned tuna, and pasta. As we worked, we really enjoyed listening to the music that they played and chatting. Afterwards, we also helped to clean the tables and sweep the floors. We were especially surprised to hear how much food everyone working at that shift was able to sort: over 3,000 bags in total.
Overall, we had an amazing time sorting food at the Second Harvest Food Bank. Everyone was extremely nice, and we learned a lot about how impactful volunteers and donations are to food banks and the people they feed. We would strongly recommend helping at Second Harvest in your free time to give back to the community!

2024 March 2nd, McLaughlin Park Service Project
A park is a place for us all to sit down and have fun. Families take their children and friends, and they are in the very depths of our memories as children. However, who cleans these public areas?
On March 2nd, I and another BRI member went to McLaughlin Park in order to help take care of the park. We arrived at 8:45 and checked in, then the staff gave us a run through of all the gear and what we needed to do. I picked up a hand cultivator to get rid of a ton of w**ds. I started off in the small dirt area, picking out all plants that looked invasive.
After a while, I switched over to a litter stick in order to pick up the trash all over the floor. I got a few pieces of it and put it into a bucket, then dumped it all into a trash bag that was set up nearby.
Unfortunately, it started raining hard, so we had to cancel the event. Personally, I gained a lot of knowledge and learned how to take care of park problems.

2024 February 11th, BRI Youth Bake Sale
On February 11th, volunteers from BRIyouth set up a food stand at the Livermore Arts New Year Community Fair to raise funds. We sold soft drink Ramune, Tao Su cookies, a well known Chinese delicacy, and red bean pastries. To fit the New Year's theme, we sold glowing Chinese lanterns, Chinese lucky charms, and even dragon stickers.
We also held a wonderful workshop where people could make paper airplanes with BRIyouth’s logo and website imprinted on them. The airplane model we used was none other than the world record airplane model, used to fly the farthest ever.
We sold food and charms from 10am to 2pm. Due to this event, BRIyouth raised a total of $220.95 in funds. I am proud of and grateful for all the hard work everyone put into this event, it could not have been possible without your contributions. Thanks to the volunteers, BRIyouth was able to raise funds for themselves, along with helping others celebrate the Chinese traditional spirit.

2023 December 29th, Abode Homeless Shelter
We take so many things for granted, like food, water, and having a roof over our head. However, there are many people less fortunate than us, who do not have anywhere to live, and are hungry most of the time.
This is why I and other BRI members decided to go cook a meal at a homeless shelter. We started with check-in around 4:10, then immediately got to work. The menu was chicken wraps with salad in them, as well as tortilla chips. Another person and I got out the chips bag, and started splitting it up, while other people laid out the chicken tenders and the sauces. One person immediately got to work making nacho cheese, and we all worked together to make some lemonade using the conveniently placed lemonade mix.
At around 5:45, serving time began. We served for around 30 minutes, and had to refill on lemonade a few times.
All in all, I learned several things. One, lemonade runs out very fast, and two, there are people who do not have food to eat in this world, and that we should take care of them.
