Andy and I made a rare delivery of firewood - an unofficial kickoff to the heating season. Thanks to Shirley from Pownal who donated over a cord of dried firewood - we just shuttled it over to a neighbor in need in Freeport. Neighbors helping neighbors.

Stay tuned for changes to our firewood distribution process for the upcoming season.

This is what happens when the professionals roll in and help. If you’re interested in volunteering at the Freeport woodbank this fall, reach out through our website www.freeportwoodbank.org. There’s plenty of wood to split and stack and we love meeting new people who want to help in the community.

Thanks to Dirigo Tree Services for their support of our woodbank! You guys are the best!

Burt Brewer is a longtime Freeport resident who shares his stories of growing up here while he shares his wood with the woodbank. What a pleasure it is to spend time with this generous fellow who also donated land to the Freeport Conservation Trust in the past year. We hauled away 4 or 5 cords of dry hardwood logs ready to buck, split, and distribute. Thank you Burt!

With over 70 cords of firewood split and stacked, how can we tell if it’s ready to distribute? This morning Andy and I spent a couple of hours sampling wood from every one of our 34 stacks to test for dryness. When your red oak is below 20% moisture, that’s a good thing! But wet wood is not. Some stacks will need more time and we’ll continue to test the newer stacks through the winter.
