8:45am. He’s reappeared!!! Just received this msg
Hi! I just drove by the Navy Base and the pelican is sitting on the road on the Navy base side by the corner of Navy Blvd and 98 right before the turn to go on the bridge. It’s still there and looks like it needs help 😞
*****
UPDATE. 5/24/26. 8am. She just made a loop around the base looking. Nothing. Someone on base may have picked him up. 🙏

5/23/26. 11/30am. Help!

I don’t really know what to do but there is a pelican on the Navy base that is lost and disoriented. It also sits down every few feet. FWC transferred me to a rehabber but they are not taking in animals. Was wondering if maybe you could get the word out. Thanks

Good Morning, Friends. This beginning of baby season is like nothing I've ever seen in my almost 20 years in the field. Since the beginning of April PWR has been caring for 200+ patients on average, a feat that usually doesn't occur until peak season which is end of June/beginning of July. We currently have around 100 baby opossums, 20 raccoons, 50 squirrels, 15 young raptors, baby skunks, baby armadillos, baby foxes, and an amalgamation of fledgling birds in care along with our other adult critical care patients and we are going through formula, prey items, and produce at an astonishing (expensive) rate. If you were ever thinking about donating to give wildlife a second chance, this is the time! Our biggest needs are fox valley formulas (raccoon, opossom, squirrel, skunk, fox, and 32/40), frozen rats/mice/chicks, live mealworms/crickets, baitfish and bait shrimp, fruits/veggies, yogurt, hard and soft cat/dog food, and eggs. All donations go directly towards animal care here at PWR and we have zeffy (no fees), paypal, and a venmo. If you would rather directly purchase items and have them shipped we use the fox valley animal nutrition website and henry's for formula, rodent pro for prey items, flukers for live insects, and walmart for produce/pet food.

At Panhandle Wildlife Rescue, we fight every day to safeguard and rehabilitate our wild neighbors. We run a full service trauma hospital and provide top-quality care to over 1000's of patients that come to us.Every donation helps us rescue and rehabilitate native Florida wildlife in trouble.Your gen...

PSA: Baby season is in full swing leaving our very small/limited staff and volunteers spread thin when it comes to rescues. We want to reiterate our clinic is open for patient drop off’s 24/7 at 5951 highway 20 in Freeport (we are NOT at Alaqua, they do not intake wildlife, we are just east of them). We do have a patient drop off area out front that is checked every half hour. Sometimes staff is on the back of the property feeding or completing a medical procedure and unable to facilitate a face to face drop off. If you do leave a patient in the drop off area, please fill out an intake form and text our hotline number 850-889-1104. If calling to report a patient please TEXT the information. I beg of you not to call 5x in a row or leave a VM. We are getting around 100 calls a day and found the best way to triage calls and help with time management is through texting so we don’t lose information and staff/volunteers can share the information more efficiently. For the safety of our patients and due to permitting regulations our facility is closed to the public so please make sure to stay in the drop off area. We understand this isn’t a perfect system, but it is the best we can offer with our current resources and allows us to not compromise patient care which is our priority. Thank you for helping us, help them and for respecting the true locals! If you feel inclined to support our efforts during the busiest time of the year, where we currently are treating over 200 patients, all proceeds go directly towards animal care:

We’ve been doing this a long time… so it really takes something special to surprise us.

And then this came across our inbox: a baby turkey… in a wheelchair.

This is a domestic turkey and her people noticed that one of her legs stopped working a couple of weeks ago. They did everything right. They got her to a vet, ruled out any fractures, and learned it’s likely a deformity. But they didn’t stop there. They built her a tiny wheelchair so she could still move around and have a chance.

Yes. A wheelchair. For a turkey. 🥹

They contacted us looking for a long-term solution. We’re happy to share that this determined little poult is now settling in at Duck Refuge at Misty Meadow Farm, where she’ll receive experienced, specialized care.

It takes compassion, creativity, and a whole lot of heart for these situations and this story has all three.

Good luck, little turkey. We’re rooting for you every step (and roll) of the way. 🦃

How to help licensed wildlife rehabilitators:

Wildlife rehabilitation is a labor love & compassion. Many licensed wildlife rehabilitators are not paid & lack funding from the state or federal government.

Many work full time jobs on top of rehabbing wildlife day & night, while taking calls from the public, caring for their families, & their pets. Baby season is tremendously draining emotionally, physically, & financially for these very special individuals.

They rely heavily on donations & to help with the costs of formulas, medications, medical supplies, vet bills, cleaning supplies, etc.

Please be kind to them & if you can not donate, ask if there are supplies they may need. You can offer to volunteer or help with transport. And if those aren't options, follow them on social media, like & share their posts so others can see what an amazing group of people rehabilitators are!
