Happy World Albatross Day!
Albatrosses (family Diomedeidae) are a group of 22 species that span the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
These migratory species feed on the surface, scooping up krill, squid, and fish.
Albatross are highly efficient at flight, using dynamic and slope soaring to allow them to cover vast distances.
These majestic birds are threatened by several threats, including seabird bycatch (in which these birds get caught in fishing nets and on fishery longlines), ingestion of plastic pollution, and the introduction of invasive species (which make it to the Albatross breeding colonies and attack and kill Albatross and offspring).
This year the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP) announced that this years’ World Albatross Day (WAD2026) theme is “Habitat Restoration” (https://www.acap.aq/world-albatross-day/wad2026-habitat-restoration).
