Happy World Albatross Day!

Albatrosses (family Diomedeidae) are a group of 22 species that span the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

These migratory species feed on the surface, scooping up krill, squid, and fish.

Albatross are highly efficient at flight, using dynamic and slope soaring to allow them to cover vast distances.

These majestic birds are threatened by several threats, including seabird bycatch (in which these birds get caught in fishing nets and on fishery longlines), ingestion of plastic pollution, and the introduction of invasive species (which make it to the Albatross breeding colonies and attack and kill Albatross and offspring).

This year the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP) announced that this years’ World Albatross Day (WAD2026) theme is “Habitat Restoration” (https://www.acap.aq/world-albatross-day/wad2026-habitat-restoration).

Take Action for a moratorium on data centers in NY! Call Governor Hochul:
Press the pause button on data centers in New York

Please call Governor Hochul to urge her to sign the Responsible Data Center Development Act.

On June 4, we scored an incredible victory with the Legislature’s passage of a bill establishing a moratorium on new data centers in New York.

Now Governor Hochul must sign this critical legislation into law.

The explosion of data centers is one of the worst affordability and environmental threats facing New York, risking more fossil fuel pollution, strained water resources, and soaring utility bills.

The Responsible Data Center Development Act contains noteworthy reforms, including water protections and labor standards. It requires the completion of an environmental impact report that would inform additional rules and regulations. Most importantly, the bill presses the pause button, establishing a one-year moratorium on new data centers, protecting our communities from their rampant destruction. And it sets a national precedent in the fight against this reckless and greedy industry.

Call Governor Hochul today: Press the pause button now data centers NOW: 866-794-6052

Join South Shore Audubon members, Food and Water Watch, All Our Energy, NYPIRG, LI Progressive Coalition, Green Party of Nassau County and other anti-nuclear power activists in a rally in Mineola on Tuesday, June 30th, at Noon. Say no to nuclear power in New York!

Nuclear energy is too toxic, too dangerous, too expensive, and too slow to build to be a real solution to the climate or affordability crisis facing New York families. It is also an environmental justice disaster, with Indigenous communities carrying a disproportionate share of the harm. Despite all...

On Sunday, June 7, members and friends of the South Shore Audubon Society gathered for their annual picnic at Brady Park in Massapequa, following a well-attended bird walk around the lake led by Joe Landesberg and Bill Clifford. The day could not have been more perfect, with beautiful weather, great company, and an exciting raffle that added to the festivities.

A special highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of two $2000 scholarships: the Jay Koolpix Environmental Scholarship and the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop College Scholarship. Jennifer Honor and Derek Fucich were the winners of this year’s awards. They each expressed their sincere appreciation for the honor and support.

The gathering also provided an opportunity to recognize the dedicated service of several Board members who recently concluded their terms. During a brief ceremony, the Society thanked these outgoing members for their contributions and warmly welcomed the new Board members who will help guide the organization into the future.

The annual picnic was a wonderful celebration of community, conservation, and the shared enjoyment of nature.
