This is what "protect and serve" looks like. This is the type of life-changing interaction that can occur when officers view homeless individuals with kindness instead of suspicion, when officers offer a helping hand instead forcibly clearing out homeless encampments and criminalizing people in need.

Yesterday, SGT McCoy met a man by the name of Dan Williams, age:57, sitting in front of Wendy’s in Horn Lake. He was down on his luck and was hungry. SGT McCoy walked him inside and offered to buy the man lunch. The Wendy’s Management would not let the deputy pay, because they covered Mr. Williams’ meal instead!

SGT McCoy sat down and ate lunch with Mr. Williams. He found out that Mr. Williams had no money or phone and has been catching rides from Ohio in an attempt to get down to Monroe, Louisiana to be with family.

SGT McCoy could tell that Mr. Williams had a good heart and wanted to help him, so he got with Deputies Brea, Garrett, and Andrews. They all pulled money out of their own pockets and pitched in to buy Mr. Williams an $89.00 Greyhound bus ticket to get home, along with an additional $60.00 for some food and necessities. SGT McCoy later said that Mr. Williams broke down and cried as he was dropping him off at the bus station in Memphis, TN. Mr. Williams looked over to SGT McCoy and told him, “Out of all of the people that reached out to help me in my time of need, it was the cops. Thank you!!”

This is not a one time incident….These random acts of kindness happen everyday across this county and our nation with law enforcement officers reaching out to help those in need, but most of these good deeds go unnoticed because that’s our job and that’s what we do. We are proud to protect and serve you!

Many law enforcement agencies are beginning to seek out alternatives to arrest or hospitalization to position their officers for success in mental health calls and to help ensure best outcomes for the people in need. One growing approach is by pairing health care professionals with law enforcement officers to respond to these calls through police-mental health collaboration response models known as Co-Responder Teams.

Federal officials on Thursday charged four current and former police officers in Louisville, Ky., who were involved in a fatal raid on the apartment of Breonna Taylor, accusing them of several crimes, including lying to obtain a warrant that was used to search her home.

The police in Louisville, Ky., fatally shot Ms. Taylor during a nighttime raid on her apartment. Officials said two officers had lied in order to get a search warrant for Ms. Taylor’s home.

In 2015, the U.S. Department of Justice released its Community Relations Services Toolkit for Policing, which included a set of recommendations for how a police department can improve its relationship with the community it serves. The recommendations focused on the following themes:

1. Acknowledge and discuss with your communities the challenges you are facing.
2. Be transparent and accountable.
3. Take steps to reduce bias and improve cultural competency.
4. Maintain focus on the importance of collaboration, and be visible in the community.
5. Promote internal diversity and ensure professional growth opportunities.
