Sound Water Stewards

Sound Water Stewards Sound Water Stewards of Island County Since 1990, we have trained over 600 volunteers. Stewardship – trail maintenance, beach cleanups, pulling noxious weeds.

What We Do

A major focus of our program is the annual training program for new volunteers – 80 hours of expert training from top professionals, plus 20 hours of hands on training. Both new and old volunteers work on a variety of projects in keeping with our mission (some programs are entirely Sound Water Stewards run, many are with aligned groups or researchers in the Puget Sound region)

Citizen

Science – we are the ‘boots on the ground’ (and in the water and mud!) for many citizen science projects – following exact protocols to guarantee the accuracy and value to scientists of the collected data. read.more

Education & Outreach – from working with with families at the beach (to appreciate tidepools, or to learn to dig for clams), to teaching kids the wonders of their island habitats, to running a 600+ person university level symposium each year. Administration – as a volunteer-driven organization, we also work on all the things that organizations need – communications & PR, financial management, fund-raising, policy, project management, volunteer engagement and recognition, and social and networking events.

Whether you love seeing the rafts of kelp at sea, enjoy devouring kelp pickles, or simply appreciate the clean air and cool water that comes from healthy marine greenery, we invite you to help us celebrate bull kelp today!

This unique, massive seaweed is not only gorgeous to look at and delicious to munch on, it provides shelter, protection, and so much more for our beloved marine species! From tiny shrimp to huge orca, all benefit from the health of these unique underwater forests. It also helps in protecting our coastlines, helping break up bigger waves as they approach and produces oxygen, enriching our waters and supporting life above and below the waterline.

At Sound Water Stewards, our volunteers head out in kayaks and on paddleboards to monitor the health of our Island County kelp beds alongside our partner organizations.

There's no fooling us, a clean beach is a happy beach to visit!

At Sound Water Stewards, we treasure our shared natural spaces, and together we can help keep them safe, accessible, and fun! While littering is not always intentional, things that linger long beyond our time out admiring the water can be detrimental to the beings that live there. Thankfully, many hands make light work!

Together, we believe that the folks who love the ocean and walking alongside it can make a huge difference in minimizing the impact of human-made materials. By dedicating just a sliver of our time visiting to ensuring that not only our own trash is properly disposed of, but any that we come across during our journey, we create the space we want to be in. And sometimes, once in a while, you find a real treasure along the way!

So we invite you to take a few steps on the less wild side, and move any debris you find inside---- whether it's a public trash can or one at home! Thank you for caring and celebrating Earth Month with us, and we look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events!

Did you know gray whales have two blow holes on the top of their head? When they surface and exhale through their blow holes it creates a spout (also referred to as a blow) that is heart shaped. This plume of warm, pressurized air and condensed water v***r typically reaches 10 to 15 feet high!

Want to join the search for this heart shaped blow? Set sail March 15th at 3:00 PM aboard the Puget Sound Express "Swiftsure" for our 10th Annual Gray Whale Cruise!
