We all know that Columbus didn’t sail the ocean blue in 1492 and respect the land and native people he encountered. In 2021, a president (Biden) acknowledged Indigenous Peoples Day for the first time but less than half of the United States officially celebrate it now, meaning 33 states still call today “Columbus Day.”

Acknowledging him over the Indigenous people he tortured and killed is right in line with the patterns of this country and our histories. Today, on this stolen land, we are still fighting to battle white supremacy in our government and our communities.

On this Indigenous Peoples' Day we give thanks to the Indigenous leaders in the United States and around the world. We are grateful to our partners Fundación Rigoberta Menchú Tum for their partnership. One of the highlights from this year was getting to spend time with Dra. Menchu Tum and participants in our Rural Youth Leadership Fellowship Program. We are grateful to her for taking the time to share some of her leadership lessons with these incredible youth leaders.
